I've had a slump in painting recently, but this week I finally finished the Ork kill teams that were taking up most of my desk.
They're not *good*, but they are done and I can move on!

My head is a multimelta. Your argument is invalid. It took me a while to finish this one - various other projects got in the way, and also it's got three miles of trim so was a little intimidating. There's fun detail, and there's tedious detail, you know?
Sisters in final form - Skittergirl (left) and Voruna (right). Mechanically identical, but both differently horrible monster-robot.

WIP Brigand for my Chaos Knights. Like my other brigand, I'm using the legs from an AdMech Dunecrawler, and making up the height difference by mounting the gun on top of the chassis.
I'm told it's Xion Day soon, which is a good an excuse as any for me to do a throwback to a model I did a few years ago.
This is Death jester Xion, the first (and still only) meme of the Masque of the Kingdom's Heart, a Harlequin troupe aligned with my Exodites.
It is Xion Day!
I have always had a soft spot for characters who aren't "real", even in their fictional context. Just love to poke at the idea of a "legitimate" person, and what it means to decide someone isn't real, doesn't "count".

Not Yarrick loosing to Ghazghkull again and Ghazghkull letting him go and keep living again. Your honour, they're in love.
He should be shirtless, with wings.
Turns out you can just make things and no-one will stop you.

I started working on this kitbash two weeks before they announced Yarrick's return as an official model, but I had already been seized by the urge to make things. The base model is 'The Summoner', one of this year's Warhammer+ subscriber bonus models.
Love wins
I have spent the last few weeks working on Yarrick, Living Saint.
Since this is tumblr, I can openly say I went with the shirtless old man for the base figure because Old Man Yaoi deserves better representation, and also I don't think I have the skills to sculpt proper armour anyway.
One thing not enough model kit enthusiasts talk about is how often you can save money by shopping for your hobby tools...in the makeup department.
Sponge painting? Makeup sponges are durable and have fine pores for smooth paint finishes. Need a plastic file? Glass nail files are half the price of gunprimer. Want to remove nub marks? Nail buffing/polishing blocks are less than a buck and you can cut them to size. Detail painting? You can get a 100 pack of eyeliner brushes or ultra fine nail art brushes for less than $10. I've had $2 makeup tweezers last me longer than the DSPIAE specialty ones. Paper nail files are even cheaper than sandpaper sheets. A cheap makeup brush set is perfect for weathering and dry brushing.
And if you just happen to find some nail polish that piques your interest while you're there, even better.
If you want to rope in the tabletop roleplaying crowd as well, it's worth noting that most commercially available dice bags are literally just jewellery pouches that've been relabelled and marked up by a couple hundred percent. You'll have a much wider selection of colours and styles than your local game shop's standard black, blue and brown, too; don't you want your dice to feel pretty?
Incomplete collection of wargamers getting horsegirled
Nail-art transfers are often waterslide transfers, the exact same kind of stuff you get in your regular warhammers box with all the skulls and eagles.

Exodite Bright Stallions
It’s a common misconception that Exodites are the Eldar Amish: pointy-eared primitives eschewing technology of all kinds.
This is complete nonsense. And the evidence is, ironically, pretty hard to miss when you consider it’s the size of a knight.
Rules and background for Knights were introduced for Epic in White Dwarf 126, and the lore is explicit: the Exodites piloted enormous mechanical constructs with the aid of spirit stones. (This was prior to the introduction of the Craftworlds, not to mention a time when Harlequins could take Land Raiders, so the lines between Eldar factions was terribly blurry.)
Anyway, Exodites had three major types of knight: the Fire Gale, the Towering Destroyer, and the Bright Stallion. The latter clearly being the best. It’s a wraithbone centaur, Nigel; of course it’s the best!
Games Workshop produced a small collection of metal miniatures for the Eldar Knights but, alas, they didn’t survive into the modern day.
But when I sat down to make my own Exodites, I was very certain that the Bright Stallion was going to make an appearance.
That said, vehicles have never turned me on at all. I find them kind of dull, to be honest. So creating a huge titanic wraithbone monster wasn’t that interesting. Besides, I wanted to make an Exodite force I could actually use on the table. So I turned my attention to something a little smaller:
Wraithguard, meet Bright Stallion.
This is my first attempt: a Wraithguard with a second set of legs attached with greenstuff (my first attempt in 20 years!). The horns are from the Wood Elves Wild Rider set, and the lance is simply an arm and the D-Scythe spliced together.
Truth be told, it’s terribly straightforward. I’d wanted something that looked Bright Stallion but still looked like a Wraithguard for an opponent. But I’d played it too safe.
So I had another go.
I was definitely happier with this go. This time I used a Drukhari disintegrator to join the legs, as well as cutting the leg to create a more dynamic pose. I also strapped a skull from the Sylvaneth Kurnoth Hunter set to the head.
It’s definitely more like a Bright Stallion. But I think my next go will be even more so. I really want to capture this idea of a wraithbone construct on a kind of wild hunt, protecting the World Spirit from primitive intruders on the sacred Maiden World.
A fantastic refit U.S.S. Enterprise cutaway model, which I believe was scratch-made by Stephan Grille.
I love how he put little people inside the model to give us a real sense of the scale of the ship.
Hey you 🫵 with the painting backlog!
This is your reminder to cheat! Cut corners. Slapchop paint. Hide tiny details with black paint shading. Prime it one color and drybrush it. Just put some paint on it!
There are so many amazing painters on the internet nowadays it can be intimidating and set hobbyists new and old to unrealistic painting standards.
Wargaming miniatures are tiny, and the quality and details keep getting tinier! I have painted so many small details none of my friends have EVER noticed, especially when playing on the tabletop. Not everyone is going to see the model from a zoomed in camera lens in bright light.
Paint as much as you're comfortable with, but do paint it! You will still feel proud to make your army YOUR army!
This. Trust me, a basic painted army looks better than a lone Golden Daemon entry surrounded by the grey hordes.
Get paint on plastic. You'll improve your brush control and colour awareness just doing the basics, and you'll have finished things. Brain chemicals like finished.
So many times I've broken painter's block accidentally by looking at a shelf of finished models and thinking "Those are nice. I should do more of that." and then I'm painting again.
This is the sorcessess Llainadau, in her most dreadful form.
More angles and waffle below the cut.
good year for painting! this year i really focused on single models rather than big units, i think it shows with all the little details and textures. really pleased with my attempts at non-metallic metal and shiny effects have come out too. honourable mention to this wet freak:
the hobby log says i did 368 minis this year but whos counting (me i am)

Yeah, that works.
Final test assembly before priming!
Because of the pilot-psyker hanging out in the middle of the model, this ended up needing nine separate subassemblies so I can't paint the interior *then* finish building it. Though one of the subassemblies is a battery hidden in that pile of books on the base so I can illuminate the pilot!
