隅田川花火大会　Wikipediaより

　この大会は、大飢饉とコレラの流行によって、江戸で多くの死者が出た1732年、8代将軍・徳川吉宗が大川端（現在の隅田川河畔）で催した、「川施餓鬼」（死者の霊を弔う法会）に遡る。1733年7月9日（享保18年5月28日）、幕府は前年にならって川施餓鬼とあわせ、慰霊と悪病退散を祈願する目的で、両国の川開きの日に水神祭を実施。その際に花火を打ち上げたのが、現在の花火大会のルーツとされる。
