Oh my God. Were they going to cry? Was this little Tasmanian gremlin actually going to cry over this? Oh my God, how pathetic.Â
Of course, these were all pretty hypocritical thoughts, because Felix was an absolute Queen of crying when he was just straight up angry or frustratedâor when he was just trying to get what he wanted out of someone like his father, who usually responded to a display of waterworks. But as weâve already established, Felix was pretty ignorant to his own hypocrisy. On some levels, he probably knew, but he was exceptional at being selectively self aware. He was so caught up in his own feelings, that it was easy enough to block out any of those nagging voices of reason or knowing better. Because he didnât want to know better. He wanted to be right. Because he deserved it.
He probably should have anticipated this partâthe part where the stranger used the argument of just showing them the sleeve, so they could both be done with it, since Felix was so sureâand maybe he had seen it coming, but that didnât stop the little jump in his throat as he was put on the spot. He felt like a cornered animalâobviously, he couldnât do that, because to do that would mean being proven wrong, and now, more than anything, Felix just wanted to come out of this argument on top. He didnât even care about the jacket anymoreânot really. Arguably, he hadnât cared about it all that much to begin with. Now though, he would even rather give the damn thing back on his terms. Pretend like he was doing it out of pity, even though he knew he was right. He wanted to be the one to take the high road.Â
But that wasnât really possible anymore, because then they would see the stain and they would know Felix was lying, and Felix was in too deep to turn back nowâeven to play dumb. No, he had to win this. He had too much pride to back down now.Â
The otherâwhose name Felix still didnât know, and it wasnât like he was going to stop and askâwas starting to yell now, and Felix glanced around warily, while trying to mostly keep his eyes trained hard on the Gremlin in case they tried to⌠hell, who knows. Jump him or something. He felt a bit like he was being interrogated by a spitting TomCat. Carrying God knows what kind of diseases. âListen, Gizmo, Iâm not going to fucking show it to you, because I donât owe you anything, you wretched little maniac. So you can call me a liar all you want, but youâre not getting near me.â
By the time the Gremlin sort of clawed Felixâs direction as if to grab him, or the jacket, or both, tears had started to well in their eyes and they were all red in the face and shaking and people on the field were definitely looking now. Oh God, this was not the kind of attention Felix wanted. Not so early in his stay, anyway, while people didnât know him well enough to know that he was obviously the one in the right, here. Ugh.Â
He scrambled to his feet, putting distance between them. âOkay, youâre like, totally crazy, and youâre making a scene and Iâm not going to give you anything, because I donât fucking need to. Especially not when youâre like, violently attacking me. And even more especially, because this is mine. So Iâm going to go now, and donât you dare follow me. I donât have a rape whistle anymore, but I can scream really loud, so donât even think about testing me.âÂ
He awkwardly took a step down the bleachers, keeping an eye on the other young survivor and trying his best to keep both his balance, and his dignity.
This was so unfair, this was so fucking unfair. They knew it was their jacket, but the other was making them doubt their own eyes. Even without the stain, Mink could see the little things about their jacket that could prove it was theirs. It was pretty easy to recognize a piece of clothing if you only owned a few pieces, they became like a second skin, with all the little curves, scars, and freckles that you knew by heart. Mink hadnât given the disappearance of the jacket to heart much, they hadnât gone looking for it like crazy, and they hated this person for making that so important, as if they had given up their ownership of the piece of clothing just because they hadnât looked for it hard enough. As if this person tried to tell them: you didnât find it, so you gave it up. And now it was hanging around his shoulders, taunting Mink. They couldnât understand why this person couldnât just admit to having Minkâs jacket, why he was so intent on keeping up the lies. Did he do it on purpose? Did he like to make Mink feel bad?Â
Mink didnât care anymore, they were crying anyway, thick crocodile tears falling down their cheeks as they stood in front of the other, who had moved away quickly, and shouting things like gizmo and little maniac, and even mentioning having a rape whistle or not having a rape whistle... honestly, Mink was barely listening. Their brain had gone into complete overdrive, and while their body kept them from moving forward again and trying to grab the jacket - though it was probably the fear that raced through their body and not their body itself - they shouting back whatever seemed to come natural, as if in a fight or flight situation, their body choose flight, while their mouth choose fight.Â
âIF YOU SHOWED IT, I WOULDNâT HAVE TO CALL YOU A LIAR!â they also didnât care about causing a scene. They already had a certain reputation around the Colony, no matter how often people didnât recognize them. As long as their body remained in flight mode, they should be good. They didnât think they could get into more trouble just for shouting at someone. âBUT YOU CANâT, BECAUSE IF YOU SHOW IT, IT WILL BECOME CLEAR THAT YOUâRE A FUCKING LIAR, WONâT IT!?â They gritted their teeth, stayed on their spot, feeling gravity weighing them down.Â
They knew they werenât going to win it, because there was no way the other would give up the jacket without a fight, and Mink wasnât fighting. While they were shouting, they realized it was useless to try. Better for them to run away and hope neither Corbin nor Elly nor anyone else Mink had come to trust, would think they were overreacting. They werenât, right? They were just standing up for themselves, because who else would? Who else would recognize that jacket at theirs? Nobody had probably seen Felix wearing theirs, because they simply hadnât recognized it as Minkâs. But they had been truthful so far, they hadnât lied to anyone about anything, every time someone asked if they were involved in the kidnapping, Mink told them honestly. They didnât lie, and they didnât like that the other made them feel like they did.Â
âYOUâRE THE ONE WHO IS CRAZY AND MAKING A SCENE, IF YOU JUST ADMITTED THAT YOU WERE WEARING MY JACKET WHEN I ASKED THEN WE WOULDNâT HAVE BEEN IN THIS SITUATION! THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!â Mink shouted, âAND FUCK YOU! VIOLENTLY ATTACKING YOU?! I HAVENâT EVEN TOUCHED YOU!â Then, quick-wittedly, raging anger and feeling powerless, Mink pushed a final couple of words through their mind into that of the other. Iâm fucking testing you, give it your all.Â
