Day 2: entr'acte
Given that Kuro and Kazuo were fast asleep back at the van, Noah had been far too restless again to stay put for long. All night he could here distant noisesâvarious crashes and clammering⌠it was all alarming though strangely exciting enough. Though the world around them had come to a stop, fate was accelerating dangerously; Who knows what today would hold, especially when he planned to give his big speech to the public. Perhaps it would be best to scout out the most appropriate gathering place so the majority of the populace could gather around⌠Leaving the vehicle quietly without disturbing its passengers, Noah ventured into the smoky and dusted streets, weary of the lack of life on the usually bustling streetsâbut now it was nothing but an avenue for ghosts; He took note that there was not an animal nor bird in sightâwithout their usual morning chirruping it truly felt like they were stuck in a perpetual night. Were they all in hiding, or was it already too late? Interesting and yet so disturbing⌠Careful of his steps on the cracked concrete, Noah shielded his nose as he passed by a recently combusted car engine, giving a cough or two before his lungs were relieved from the stench of burning oil and gasoline. Awful.. there were a few instances of blood trails here and there too⌠just how far gone had things escalated in just one night? He had to hurry and gather followers soon beforeâ "Oof!" In his preoccupation, he roughly brushed against a broad shoulder that had suddenly appeared in his wayâpeople? Just when he thought he had the streets to himself⌠Looking forward, flustered, Noah adjusted his glasses giving a weak chuckle. This didnât look well at all⌠'Watch where the hell you're going, old man!' 'This prick thinks he's so high and mighty just cos he's dressed nice!' 'This assholeâŚ' "Ah, excuse me⌠I donât want any troubleâŚ" Oh man, these were like the stereotypical thugs youâd read about in manga⌠were they really singling him out at a time like this?! What to do⌠he had to dissuade them somehow! "Hey, do I really look that old to you? HahaâŚ"
"Ahh... This troop again." Niko who had been resting by a nearby alley peeked her head out to the main street when she took notice of the commotion. In a fire time like this, truly anything was a stress factor. To say the least, she was far from being impressed. It was the same group of people she saw bullying random passersby to make them surrender whatever goods they had. In times like these, the saying 'there is power in numbers' couldn't be more true. That was most likely the reason why many survivors have started banding together and more often than not, their primary activity was to steal from the weak. When Niko found them preying a victim earlier in the day. she didn't do anything to take justice back... regrettably. Since the day before, her thoughts were already in a mess due to all this fighting demons business and she had yet to decide anything regarding having to fight fellow despairing humans.
And from the looks of it, these same thugs have found themselves a new victim. What could she do in the moment? Come out and take them all on? Niko shook her head. On top of being physically exhausted, at this very moment, she did not have the heart to do such a thing. Staying hidden behind a wall while another is in trouble was not the most chivalrous thing to do either and--
Oh.Â
Oh, that's right. Aside from numbers, in this very city, there was another indicator of power that was much, much stronger than numbers.
"GYAAAAA--!!!!" Still hidden in the alleyway, Niko gave her best impression of a maiden in distress and screamed her heart out. "A DEMON!!! HELP ME!"  She wasn't much of an actress but at this point, a victim terrified of demons was not the most difficult image to visualize yet.
Upon hearing the the sudden yelling, the startled thugs exchanged glances at each other in bewilderment.
'D-Demons?!'
Between saving their lives and stealing a few coins, they unanimously chose the former and all ran away to the opposite direction, pushing everything in their way. A single person might be an easy target for a group thugs, but against ravenous demons, they were mere dust. From having observed them, Niko knew for certain that they were not summoners. Well, that was one good deed done.
