So back…a while ago I made a post about things MDZS fandom really needs.  And from that post someone made a fantastic Guide to Chinese/pinyin terms.  And now I have my own contribution, a list of every chapter of the Mo Dao Zu Shi/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation novel along with summaries of what happens when.  

Because I know as a writer I often want to look at a particular scene in canon to refresh my memory or check something, but it’s nearly impossible to remember what happens when due to the different chronologies in each version of the story.

So I spent the last couple weeks listening to the audio drama and skimming the novel and making notes.  Hopefully they are useful and understandable to more than just myself, but you can definitely see my prejudices.  Like entire chapters where it’s basically just “people talk…plot”  versus deep detail on Wangxian scenes.  Anyway, here it is, I hope it helps.

The Untamed (CQL) Episodes vs. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (MDZS) Chapters!

OP, if you want me to make my own post or w/e, let me know, I never post on tumblr so I’m unsure of posting etiquette.

This is a guide that I made for fun just to display all the differences between the show and the book, and sort out which episodes are taking inspiration from which chapters and what added content (AC) is where. I don’t know why I had so much fun doing this.

I ranked the number changes on my own loose personal scale of light -> medium -> heavy. I only counted AC as MAJOR plot additions, if I were to nitpick every tiny difference this would take years.

Ep 1: Prologue, Reincarnation, Aggression 1-3 (ch 1-5)

Changes: Fairly Heavy

Ep 2: Arrogance 1-5 (ch 6 - 10)

Changes: Fairly Heavy

Ep 3: Refinement Pt 3 (ch 13) + Added Content

Changes: Heavy

AC: Jiang trio hanging out in Caiyi town, different intro of JZX, different intro of Lan Wangji, Wen Qing + Wen Ning sent to Cloud Recesses to find Yin Iron, Xue Yang and Wen RuoHan being evil together

Ep 4: Refinement Pt 4 (ch 14), scene from Poisons Pt 4 (ch 59) + AC

Changes: Very heavy, classroom scene is near exact to book, WWX meets WN here rather than at archery competition, other than that, all AC

AC: Wen Chao picking fights in class, LXC stopping him, Meng Yao chatting with LXC, WWX and NHS fishing, WWX spying on Wen Qing and fighting with LWJ

Ep 5: Refinement Pt 5-7 (ch 15-17) + AC

Changes: Heavy

AC: WQ + WN lamenting over his illness, JC and NHS find out Wen Clan has a funky spying owl, WN gets corpsey on Biling Lake to everyone’s concern

Presenting a timeline of mdzs’s complex events with approximate ages for everyone who is given an age (sorry, Song Lan, I think you’re xxc’s age but like that’s not explicitly in the text). 

Probably the last post for the week since this whole ordeal of falling back into TGCF hell made me lose a dangerous amount of sleep 😆
