Claws, fangs, fists, daggers—these and their ilk involve the closest contact of the wielder and the victim. This is honest and pure violence, each body struggling against the other in an intimate embrace. It is the ideal to be striven for.

Polearms, designed to keep one's opposite at a chaste distance, display a fear of the intimacy of close combat at claw-point. Their wielders abhor the true nature of the task. This fear of intimacy is exemplified further in contrivances such as winged spears, or even worse, the catchpole. These implements are explicitly designed to keep bodies separated, and to thus preserve a false sense of the wielders chastity despite a desire for the same fruits of violence.

Firearms are an even more drastic example of this phenomenon, seeking to entirely disengage the weapon wielder and target. With firearms the opposing parties are not to be connected by even a haft, which in polearms can act as a proxy-connection, where each party can interact with each other in a physical sense yet the wielder may maintain a veneer of purity. The firearm does away with this entirely, creating a disjointed arrangement of aggressor and aggressed. This isolates the weapon-wielder from any but the most remote sense of connection with their opposite.
