“It is unfortunate that the theoretical undoing of gender stability has had so little impact out in the real world.  It’s too bad, in other words, that people still think of men and women as if they are alien species from Mars and Venus, respectively, and that they cannot see the multiple differences that disaggregate each category and that prevent large-scale pronouncements about what “women” like or how “men” behave or why “women like chocolate” and “men love football.” If we could actually see these gender categories as saturated with contradictions, as discontinuous across all bodies they are supposed to describe, then we could begin to notice the odd forms of gender, the gaga genders, that have multiplied viruses in late capitalist culture.”
