A soft breeze blew through the streets of Twilight Town, blowing The Puppet’s hair gently. She stood, waiting, in front of the train terminal. She wasn’t exactly sure what she was waiting for, but she knew that something was coming. She had nothing to lose, for she was merely a puppet, if the Something Coming was bad, and could only hope that whatever she might gain would be beneficial. She turned to the clock tower, absentmindedly checking the time. 11:30 PM, December 31st. This late at night, and the sun still shone as if it were sunset. Fascinating, she thought.
The shuffling of footsteps coming up behind her drug her out of her headspace, causing her to turn. A familiar boy stood a few feet away, clad in an Organization XIII cloak, a black sash tied around his eyes and limp, long white hair. If she remembered his name correctly, it was Riku - one of the only people to actively remember her.
“What are you doing here, Riku? Here to kill me again?”
Riku shakes his head. “No, not today of all days. It’s New Year’s Eve and… and I wanted to spend it with Sora. But… I can’t bear to look at his body as I welcome the new year, so I thought I would try and spend it with the part of Sora who’s awake. That left you and Roxas and Roxas and I hate each other. Besides, I was watching for a while and it didn’t look like you were doing anything.”
Xion tilts her head in confusion. “New Year’s Eve? What’s that? It feels like I’ve heard the term before, but it’s not clear.”
Riku smiles gently. “It’s where one year officially changes over to what’s recognized as another. It’s a time recognized for new beginnings, the end of past grudges, the start of new relationships and friendships, and a time to celebrate. In short, it’s where you can become a new and better version of yourself.”
Xion frowns before stepping closer to Riku, checking his expression for any hints of malice. “But I haven’t even been alive for an entire year, so why would I want to become a new person? I’m already new and satisfied with who I am. I’m satisfied with my current friends and I have no grudges. Considering all of this, then what’s the point?”
Xion can’t really tell, but it looks like Riku raises his eyebrows in surprise.
“Well… there is a version of you that you could become that I would be satisfied with…” Riku mutters softly.
“I know you mean Sora, Riku, but I’m not ready to go back to him yet. I still have experiences I want to have and life still left to live. I’m my own person.”
A tense moment of silence passes between them before Xion walks even closer to Riku, taking a hold of his hand gently.
“Hey, I’ll make a deal with you Riku. Let me finish out my own year and then I’ll go back to Sora, okay? It can be my way of personally welcoming the new year with you, and you alone.”
Riku stumbles back a step, looking shocked with his jaw hanging open.
“You…. you’ll agree to go back to Sora? Really?” Xion nods.
“Th-thank you, Xion. I don’t know what else to say.”
In a moment of weakness and joy, Riku hugs the short girl tightly.
Later, when Xion stands atop the clock tower with Roxas, she remembers her promise and a sense of peace crosses her mind.
Happy New Year, Riku. This is my new year and my new me.
