#ConservationOptimism: In December 2021, researchers and villagers in Bangladesh's Chattogram Hill Tract released 10 captive-bred Asian giant tortoises. The release hopes to help boost population numbers of the once thought to be extinct species. The Turtle Conservation Center is also breeding other endangered turtle and tortoise species. The release signifies a collaboration with surrounding communities and hope for future breeding programs. #ConservationOptimism: Over the past 35 years, The Chilean subspecies of burrowing parrot has increased from 35 individuals to almost 4,500; saving them from the brink of extinction. The population increase can be attributed to protecting their main habitat, the Río de los Cipreses National Reserve. These protections have also helped preserve native plant species which the parrots eat. Scientists are hoping to see the birds repopulate areas they used to live in as their numbers continue to grow. #ConservationOptimism: After 16 years of efforts the Critically Endangered Blue-throated Macaw of Bolivia reached an important milestone- the 100th chick fledged in the wild! With the help of battery-operated tracking collars and satellite systems, experts have been able to track the macaws to their breeding sites, aiding conservation efforts. #ConservationOptimism: The Jaguar population in Mexico has grown 20% from 2010 to 2018! The success can be attributed to scientists ability to count the population for the first time via camera traps across the country as well as the ability to come together with local peoples and the government to create a national strategy to protect critical habitats and corridors. They also created a programs to pay people to not deforest in critical habitat and cover costs for livestock lost due to Jaguars. The protection also helps other species in these habitats. In 2022, Mexico will expand the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. Overall, this is a great example of how conservation strategies can include different spheres. #NewSpeciesAlert: A new species of beaked whale has been identified thanks to the work between Indigenous knowledge and western science. The Ramari's beaked whale is named after Ramari Stewart, a Mātauranga Māori whale expert who noticed differences in this whale compared to true beaked whales. This is one of the first times a whale species is named after an Indigenous woman. Additionally, the scientific name for the species "Mesoplodon eueu" comes from the Khosian people in South Africa who helped with the distinguishing of the species. It is exciting to hear about a new species and inspiring see more groups of people being recognized for their work and knowledge in the field. #ConservationOptimism: Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, and Costa Rica announced that they will be creating the Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR) Initiative. This initiative will increase the size of protected marine territory to include important migratory routes for highly migratory species like turtles, sharks, and marine mammals. The new protections also aim to reduce illegal, under-reported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the area. Leaders also included small scale fishermen in the dialogue to ensure success of the protected area and in response to increased presence of larger fishing fleets. This is one of the first decisions of countries with bordering maritime territories to create public policy together in hopes of preserving biodiversity. As a San Diego based organization, we have had the privilege to see and be inspired by the incredible work of artist Carly Ealey and Christopher Konecki. Their love of the environment shines through the pieces they do, highlighting local species and habitats that make San Diego such a special place to live. Here at Key Conservation, we believe that everyone can use their skills to make a difference in conservation and their work is a perfect example of that. Art inspires action and together we are excited to announce a mural project that will be a spotlight on conservation efforts in direct connection to San Diego. First with the Torrey pine tree, endemic to San Diego and critically endangered and the second, the peregrine falcon which has been successfully recovered from near extinction.
