I became interested in this book after watching the movie Arrival. This book is made up of different short stories - one of which is the basis of the movie Arrival. I think that this book is beautifully written and the stories are extremely engaging. The sci-fi stories that Ted Chiang creates in this book are incredibly original and expanded my imagination in ways that I didn’t think were possible. If you like sci-fi, I recommend this book. If you don’t like sci-fi, I still recommend this book. I would also recommend you are open to what the book is about and what parts of you the stories reflect.

Obviously this book is really popular and after reading it, I can understand why. I don’t think that it necessarily holds up for an older audience since it is a fantasy book but it holds up as a kid’s book. It has a fun adventure that starts on the main character’s 13th birthday. I think that the adventure is pretty tight and doesn’t have loose ends or is too out-there.

I read this book in May and I really wanted to like it. I think that having Jack as the narrator was both a strength and a weakness. I think it offered a very unique perspective and made the book more whimsical than depressing at times. For the most part, I think that it was a well-written book, I just didn’t like the way the second half of the book went. I do think that it is realistic in the way that Jack didn’t automatically love the outside world and was treated as very fragile. The reason I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would is because of Jack as the narrator. He didn’t seem very consistent as a character as far as maturity goes. He seemed like a kid for the most part but sometimes he was written as strangely mature for his age. I know that kids can have some moments of maturity but Jack’s seemed really out of place and seemed to only be written for the plot and not as a natural development of Jack’s character.

I finished reading this today. The world-building done by Charles Yu in this book is incredible. I love how real-world physics was incorporated into this book. The present of some real-world physics being incorporated with the “science fictional” physics really bent the boundary between the real world and fiction. My only “gripe” with this book is that the ending was a little anti-climactic. I won’t spoil it, obviously, but I wish there had been a little more excitement leading toward it. Maybe making it anti-climactic was the point. Either way, I really liked this book. It was a nice, easy read and I recommend it for those who like sci-fi, kinda nerdy books! 

I rated this book a 4.5/5 because I’m not sure that it’s a favorite of mine, or a 5 star book. But, i can’t stop thinking about it, even 12 hours after I finished it, so maybe it is a book that I would consider a 5/5, even if not a favorite.

It took me over a month and now that it’s over, I’m sad! This book was fantastic. I remember being shocked by it’s length but now I realize that every word is important. This book is a journey and was worth every single step. It is one of my new favorite books and rivals my all time favorite book. As I mention in nearly every blog post about this book, this book is long but well, VERY well worth every word.

I’m starting this book right now. I am really excited for this because I’ve heard it’s a really good young adult novel, a really good romance book. I like reading books that make me feel like I’m in love because they make me smile like an absolute idiot in the best way possible! I can’t wait to swoon.

Okay, I just started reading TFiOS. I haven’t read it since 2016, I think. I’m excited to remember Augustus Waters and everything that happens. I’ll try to blog about the books I read more often.

After I finished reading it, I understood why it was one of my favorite books when I was younger. I’m happy to say that it’s a book that, in my opinion, still holds up over time. It’s a 4/5 for me; which is the same rating I gave it when I added it to my ‘read’ list back in 2014.

So basically, Gnomon is a long, albeit compelling, book with fantastic world-building.

I saw the movie in 8th grade, and apparently I’ve read the book before but I don’t remember much. I feel as if every book that I read before 2018 has been wiped from my memory. Anyway, the princess bride is very entertaining, I’ve only read the first chapter so far and I do somewhat remember it now.
