Xólotl. Mexica culture. (1250-1521 d.C.). México
Huitzilopochtli, God of War and protector of the Mexica people.
KUKULCAN (pron. Koo-kool-kan) is the name of a feathered serpent god in the mythology and religion of Mesoamerica, in particular, the Yucatec Maya. He is also identified as the feathered serpent god Quetzalcóatl by the Toltecs and Aztecs, as Gucumatz to the Quiché Maya of Guatemala, and Ehecatl, the wind god of the Huastecs of the Gulf Coast.
Kukulcan and his other manifestations are all unified by the belief that each was considered a creator god and a bringer of rain and winds. The god is particularly associated with Chichen Itza where a large temple was built in his honour. Kukulcan is also the name of a 10th-century CE cultural hero in Yucatec Maya history, and he has a counterpart in the Toltec and Aztec histories where he carries the name Ce Acatl Topiltzin Quetzalcóatl. The feathered serpent god remains today a powerful symbol of Mexican indigenous cultural heritage.

Sergio Sanchez Santamaria - 8th July1976
Sergio is the contemporary to the artists previously mentioned in posts on Mexican artists. Scratchboard art is the core of his illustration work but he has also worked as a printmaker, muralist, painter and teacher.
Santamaria has had many experienced tutors and influences during his time as a printmaker even learning about printmaking at the ‘Taller de Gráfica Popular ‘, (also mentioned previously on the muralist post). The main tutor for him during that time was Alfredo Mereles but also got help from the the assistant to Rivera and Orozco named Jesús Álvarez Amaya. I enjoy Santamaria’s love for musical sub cultures too having similar interests in metal, punk and thrash. Seeing him wear a Napalm Death patch in a personal photo doing his work helps give a creative kinship in that spreading art through music and t-shirts is fun. Speaking about current trends in Mexican art direction during an interview for ‘Tinyworkshops’, he discusses that there are two major trends that include either the disdain for Mexico or a jingoistic folk art for tourists. Santamaria mentions that his work lies beyond both these trends and in the trenches of modern times but with traditional Mexican approaches. I understand what he means by this statement as you can see his respect for Mendez and all the precursors discussed in previous posts. Although he’s not really interested making traditional folk art himself he does express a lot of development for traditional imagery and folklore laden art, especially pre-columbian Mesoamerican. The line work turned into texture yet again expresses deep shadows and brilliant negative space work defining the white/empty areas of his work. The dynamics have developed even further but this time with the cartoonish caricatures having a more solid understanding and expression of form making the structure three dimensional in it’s direction opposed to flatter pieces made by his predecessors. Leopoldo Mendez - 30th June 1902 til 8th Feb 1969
Leopoldo similarly to the artists/printmakers in the previous posts was also politically left in his ideologies and a member of the Mexican Communist Party. Mendez was known to be politically active and was heavily referenced in his work and won many prestigious peace prizes due to his activism. ‘Taller de Gráfica Popular‘ was the printmaker studio he founded/co-founded for the betterment of Mexican people and their heritage. To help fund this and his lifestyle he worked in various newspapers/journals similar to his predecessors and contemporaries along with teaching in schools and making book covers. The etching style and influence of Posada is directly evident in Mendez’s work, even more so with the portrait he made of Jose. The use of Calaveras, pre Columbian Mesoamerican imagery combined with the dynamic gestures really catch my eye and the prevalent lighting described by the etching line work textures make Leopoldo an important artist for me to reference in my upcoming illustration work. The caricature/cartooning on some pieces shows how versatile his techniques and understanding were. Mexican Muralism
Mexican Muralism a movement and response to the Mexican Revolution existed to share pride in national heritage and celebrate cultural identity. Using the approach of Italian Fresco style paintings from the Renaissance and Social Realsim, the artists made statements boldly on walls depicting various political ideologies to a large base of illiterate society.
The approach allowed people to access what would often be designed to be placed in galleries and has even influenced the lifestyles of modern day graffiti.
"Los tres grandes" (The Three Greats)
As seen in the previous post, Diego Rivera was part of ‘The Three Greats’ who spearheaded the movement along with Jose Clement Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. All pieces having elements of the renaissance period painting such as the compositions, allegorical content and colours merged with leftist societal viewpoints on capitalism and industrial revolution. Local history would play a big part in the stories portrayed and the works placement. The layers of influence from Posada can be seen in a lot of the work and the continuation of the expressionist style pays homage to the pride they wanted to instill in their people.
I enjoy the fact that classical art, cubism, surrealism, post impressionism and most importantly ( primarily in Siqueiros’ work, pre columbian art has influenced them all. Franciso Goya and the likes of Picasso can be seen throughout the lighting and anatomy of subjects in the artwork meshed together to become a marriage of european, south american and pre columbian mesoamerican heritage.

Celebrating Mexican Illustration
I understand it’s been a while since I’ve posted here but there’s no better time than the present to resurface. My purpose for the sudden appearance is due to researching Mexican and Mesoamerican related works then wanting to share my findings along with developing a commissioned illustration in one space. I won’t be posting my work until much later (if I do at all), but wanted a space to write down my musings and notes other than my sketchbook for now as my handwriting is atrocious an printing this off is a lot easier for now.
I’ll be posting ,the chosen artists separately to this post rather than one big mega thread as it could get confusing. I may not be as eloquent and a little rusty on the artist analysis techniques but these are mainly shorthand notes for me to reference whilst making my work. If you find them interesting or useful then that’s just an added bonus.
To begin I have chosen:
Jose Guadalupe Posada -
2nd Feb 1852 til 20th Jan 1913
Politically influenced printmaker/etcher and lithographer. influential to many Mexican artists and cartoonists due to the visual content portraying social and political critiques via satirical illustrations/prints involving the dead.
Throughout his life he owned is how printing studio and worked on promotional items such as posters or illustrations in newspapers. Humour was a large part of his satirical commentary on government abuse and daily life.
Reoccurring imagery of snakes or other poisonous animals along with Calaveras/Skeletons, skulls, angels and society were depicted which culminated in a character called ‘La Catrina’ (female skeleton with a large hat), invented to mock the rich who denied their ancestral Mexican heritage.
Octavio Paz
remarks in one article that they believe Jose to be part of the Expressionist movement, considering the content and approach to the work I tend to agree.
Posada lives on due to the influence he gave to Diego Rivera (Frida Kahlo’s husband) and Jose Clemente Orozco, who became renowned for their Mexican muralist movement as well as cubist and caricature paintings.
I believe the heavy shadows along with negative space in his etching work will be the ideal approach for the textures and lighting I want to achieve in my work. In a similar fashion to my obsession with Bernie Wrightson’s work and approach I believe this will help bridge the gap culturally with appropriate Mexican folk art foundations.

Decided to do some automatic drawings similar to the exercise on the Proko 'Meditation for Artists' with Tim Gula. The kneeling man on the right was made just because I felt like making a human silhouette whilst keeping very loose and going automatic as well as letting the energy dictate. It's good practise to just skate the page and do automatic drawing, it doesn't just warm you up but it clears your head. #drawing #sketching #automaticdrawing #pencil #animation #illustration #abstract #fun https://www.instagram.com/p/BueHJGJlAFE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tuvxck8z8swe
