Pallas's cat in two different styles!

Its International Pallas's Day today (23rd April)! These elusive wild cats are found across rocky montane grasslands of central Asia. Their thick and well camouflaged fur is perfectly adapted to surviving harsh, high-altitude landscapes. But their populations are declining due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting, making conservation and awareness more important than ever.

Its World Civet Day today! (4th April) Here's a Binturong, the largest species of civet. These elusive mammals are crucial to seed dispersal in the forests of Asia, but their populations are threatened due to habitat loss and illegal hunting and trade, with their conservation status categorized as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.

Ospreys! These striking raptors are found across a wide variety of habitats on all continents except Antarctica. They feed mainly on fish, and are expert hunters. Their excellent vision helps them detect underwater objects from the air, from as far as 40m away, after which they dive feet-first into the water to catch fish, oftentimes completely submerging their entire bodies. P.S. The illustration shows the osprey using its wings to shield its catch from other predators, scavengers or rivals. This behaviour in raptors is known as 'mantling'.

A wild kitty in all her glory

I recently got to see a velvet-fronted nuthatch for the first time and I'm kinda obsessed! They are found in deciduous and evergreen forests across South and South-east Asia, and mainly feed on insects and spiders on trees. What's fascinating about nuthatches is their strongly curved claws which allows them to climb down vertical tree trunks which is a rare ability among birds!

The brown hawk-owl (Ninox scutulata), also known as the brown boobook is a medium-sized owl commonly found across South and Southeast Asia. It has striking yellow eyes, a brown-streaked chest, and a long tail, giving it a hawk-like silhouette in flight. The brown hawk-owl is a remarkable nocturnal raptor that thrives in both wild and human-dominated landscapes. It prefers wooded habitats ranging from evergreen and deciduous forests to plantations and city parks where it roosts quietly during the day and emerges at dusk to hunt. Though fairly adaptable, the species serves as an indicator of healthy tree cover, reminding us of the importance of preserving green spaces even in urban environments.

Snow leopards are among the most elusive big cats in the world, found across alpine and sub-alpine regions of Central and South Asia. Their populations are vulnerable and face threats from habitat loss and poaching. By conserving snow leopards, we protect entire mountain ecosystems and support the biodiversity and communities that depend on these fragile landscapes.
