I can totally see Venis with a Serperior and the idea of them both with their heads up looking down their nose (or lack thereof) at you. Also serperior color change illustrations to match Venis and vice versa... imagine.
I wanted to set her up a bit like she was a serious trainer (or even gym leader) since she's pretty strong within canon. I *know* she'd take pokemon training way too seriously.
Neptune would've had a galarian ponyta from childhood (not even knowing it was a different color for the longest time) and fished up a horsea as her first pokemon obtained as a trainer.

Last night I was trying to figure out what pokemon I'd give JD and Chess (OCs I feel I rarely talk about) and I was really struggling on it.
I feel like they both have personalities and jobs that would lend themselves well to various pokemon-
For Chess:
Chess is a model, which brings to mind plenty of gorgeous and fabulous pokemon.
He's also ex-mafia, which brings to mind plenty of pokemon the various enemy teams have had over the years.
Chess' tastes are very "if it costs under a certain amount of money it's probably not worth my time" and I feel like that vibe alone is a couple of pokemon.
Chess' personality tends to be laid back, but there are a couple story moments where he gets very frightened and protective. That's more pokemon.
For JD:
JD is a video editor who, while technically also freelancing elsewhere, mainly works for a popular youtuber (or equivalent). He's into video and picture work as well as website development. This is a few pokemon to me- primarily electric types.
JD appreciates the small things in life and really does his best to dig deep into what he does and doesn't appreciate about everything around him.
He also has a personality that's fairly blunt and doesn't hold back on how he'd like to be treated- especially when he tends to misinterpret strangers' criticism as them giving him advice on how to live. Once again, immediately a few specific pokemon to me.
JD is the main one at home most days and tends to have semi-frequent high-pain and low-energy days. Since his disability was based on myself at my worst, I can think of plenty of pokemon that could be useful for him to have.
For him I think he'd prefer a pokemon that can aid him emotionally, but it might be nice to also have a pokemon with moves like vine whip (etc) who can grab things from far away.
As for both...

I can't help but feel like since they don't have pets (or want any, really) in this world, they wouldn't have come into owning any pokemon naturally. Taking care of a pet (or pokemon) is a lot of work that I don't know if either of them would want to partake in.
Still, the idea of a small pokemon just randomly ending up in their possession and them getting attached to it is golden.
I need Chess to come home with a little creature and have to convince JD it'd only be for a week or so only for that "week" to be "the rest of their lives."
I think with that in mind I can completely disregard all of the work and personality stuff- which actually helps a ton since I was getting mixed signals on what pokemon worked in ways that matched *all* or *most* of the given points.
...and I've thus far landed on Noibat for them! I wanted a Kalos pokemon that was relatively small, cute, and can get dangerous fast if not taken care of properly. Its sonic waves are no joke and I think Chess would be worried about having one around if it weren't for how quickly the two absolutely fall in love with it.
I can imagine JD sitting on the counter feeding it fruits and berries, taking it with him to any meetings with his boss (who is also his best friend), and overall deeply caring for the little guy.
I feel like battling pokemon is similar to walking your dog or making sure your cat has a scratch post- it's entertainment, it gets some energy out, and it can be really hard to go without it- and Chess would end up teaching JD how to do small battles between them and their friends to keep their Noibat relaxed.
If they ever got worried about it evolving (it evolves at 48 and only does a few weekly battles to keep it calm, it'd take years upon years for it to evolve) they'd probably just give the little guy an everstone.
I keep assigning my OCs pokemon and forgetting I did that so I'm off to find a team building website that isn't bogged down by being required to add nature/stats/held item/moveset and doesn't get weird when you only pick 1-3 pokemon and-
