Here’s another one from my archives. It’s the town under a rock, Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain, where around 3,000 inhabitants are living quite literally, under a rock.

The small white washed town has a unique setting along a narrow river gorge eroded by the Rio Trejo river, with many of the houses being built into and under the walls of the gorge itself.

There was a practical reason for living here.  The natural caves are ideal living quarters because they didn’t need to build whole houses to keep out the heat and cold- the cave did that. All they had to build were the façades. 

The bars, restaurants and food shops are ranked as the best in the region.

In summer, the town is vibrant.

The town used to be large store rooms for local produce, b/c of the cool environment in the rock. 

It’s fascinating to think of them building this town.

Even though a lot of the town is under the rock, a lot of it still gets the sun. It’s like going in and out of tunnels.

Zari or jari is a form of embroidery from South Asia made using an even thread traditionally made of fine gold or silver. This thread is woven into fabrics, primarily silk, to make intricate patterns and elaborate designs of embroidery. During the Vedic ages, the gold embroidery was associated with the grandeur and regal attire of gods, kings, and literary figures. Zari was popularised during the Mughal era; the port of Surat was linked to the Meccan pilgrimage route which served as a major factor for re-introducing this ancient craft in India.

Real zari was originally made from fine silver or gold thread is drawn from silver or gold alloys. These days, cheap and durable alternatives are used. This non-genuine modern zari is light in weight & more durable than earlier editions. Also, it has the sought after properties of resistance to tarnishing and knotting.

Surat in the state of Gujarat on the west coast of India is the world's largest producer of all types of zari embroidery. The art of zari making has been inherited from father to son for many centuries, and are often passed down in utmost secrecy.

The waved back, eared sides and seat upholstered in floral pink and ivory colour silk, the seat rail re-lacquered light green and carved with shells and scrolling foliate motifs, on six short cabriole legs.
