D.I.D. - Beyond Good and Evil
“Without music, life would be a mistake.”
This famous line from Friedrich Nietzsche opens this particular week-end special in “Focusing on…”. And it should not be hard understanding who is the protagonist of this article: the visual kei band D.I.D -Until the Day I Die-. They formed in 2012, after the dissolution of Para:noir, and nowadays they are composed by Akane (vo.), the famous singer of Julius and Para:noir, Tohma (gt.), former guitarist of dolore, Satoshi (gt.), former guitarist of Para:noir (who departed in 2013 for familiar reasons), Sho (ba.), former bassist of Para:noir and Issei (dr.), former supporter of Amulet and drummer of 2th the Discoland, who substituted Takashi in 2012. Their concept is nothing else that a prosecution of Para:noir’s one: their lyrics are based on the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, who stated the death of all certain things and the arrival of a man, who should manage his own fate. Therefore in this article we will analyze their few but important releases with the typical meter of the German philosopher, seeking the great influence he had on their lyrics, mainly written by Akane.
Their debut occurred on 4th July 2012 with their first mini-album Until the Day I Die; a clear introduction of their concept, where every feature of Para:noir is reprised in every possible way. The title-track deals with a theme which is really strong: the vane research of the sense of life, which is important for who seeks it (the screamed line “is there the meaning that is seeking worth to the life?” is really powerful in this sense) and he will never stop living as a man as it is said on the final lines:
“Hokori hajinu koe o arage
kyou mo ashita mo koko ni tatsu
akuruhi ga saigo no hi demo
ato ni kuiru koto naku chire”
Today and tomorrow, I’ll be standing here
The bright day that is coming is the final day, but
After, my regrets will scatter and disappear"
“Raising my prideful, unashamed voice
After some months they released their first full-album Providentia. The title is obvious a reference to the christian Providence which watches over every man’s fate; the song is about the necessity of knowing the fate which falls over the protagonist, who like the whole mankind is condemned to an eternal damnation, which can be overcome only by death, which here is defined as a duty.
Then they released their first single The Point of no Return. A chaotic atmosphere invades this song, with Akane’s voice which creates a distorting effect. The theme is the meaning of singing, seen as the only device which makes a life worth, as it is said by the key-line ”I will sing until the Day I Die", with a clear reference to one of the most concepts stated by Nietzsche, the eternal return of the same, with these deep lines:
“Modoru basho sae ushinai kaerenu dake na no ka
koko igai no doko ni ikiru basho ga aru?”
“I even lost the place that I would go back to, is it just that I won’t return?
Is there anywhere other than here where I would live?”
After this single, they released another single The Natural Born Sinner and then they released Paranoid Personality, a very big single; in fact they included only a new song (the title track) along with some re-arrangements of Para:noir songs, as nihilism., Good morning, Mother fxxker, Amaryllis, LiLLY of the VaLLeY, blind=ness Maria, Merciless Sorrow -666- and some others, which give more modernity to these famous songs. The title track is the first one played by Issei and it features an incredible piano introduction, making it the best song they ever made. The theme is focused on the concept of the loss of certainity, marked by the famous line “God is dead” and the only thing which should be done is “trust only yourself until the Day You Die.”. After this single they announced a new release, Fatal Error Race, which was expected on June 2014, but because of Akane’s psychological problems, the band stopped its activities.
In conclusion this band took the music into a new aspect, used as a vehicle for informing people on what our world is going through. Also their sonorities travel into the sphere of human consciousness and into our minds, making us reflecting through words which apparently belong to a remote philosophy. Therefore, if you want to understand more about their distorting lyrics, you should read something of Nietzsche (trust me, it helps so much!). But it is not over: D.I.D announced their return and the release of Fatal Error Race on August 2014, because God is not really dead, he is still there, as it is suggested by their new tour’s name Gott ist da.
