Common Module - AY25.26 CTS B

We might not know what will happen to us in the next 10 years but one thing for sure is that my artistic vision statement will stay the same where I want to motivate, encourage and create social awareness through designing either infographics with structural system or the use of photography, in showcasing the beauty side of the topic that I am going to shoot. 

As we know global warming has already started to take place as time goes by and our Ozone layers are becoming thinner day by day due to human industrial and consumer activities. One idea that I have in mind will be to create a photobook that stresses the importance of keeping mother earth safe, through showing the before and after image of the aftermath, eg. pollution etc. 

A comment from my classmate that I like to bring up stated “would you go to other places e.g Brazil to showcase the environment for photography?”, much as I would like to but based on my current budget since I am still studying, I can only go to neighbouring countries such as malaysia, thailand or indonesia etc and without a doubt if I have the opportunity to venture to other continents for a photoshoot be it together with a group of friends or alone, I will go in a heartbeat. 

The Human Element: A Time Capsule from the Anthropocene by James Balog, a photographer and author of the book, is one design that I feel resonates with me which connects with my vision statement as both of us shared the same similarity whereby we talk about mother nature and the importance of protecting. 

Through this book it features photographs that document how humanity reshape nature, which also highlights the importance of sustainability between mother nature and human interactions. 

With the amount of housing development starts to rise, the amount of land that mother nature has will start to decrease which will be bad for our ecosystems as nature plays a part in our daily lives through being an air filter, preventing soil erosion and providing us with the oxygen that we need. This photograph also helps to create social awareness where it indicates an issue that we might face as the years goes by due to the increasing amount of human population. 

Through CTS B, it helps to widen my perspective on how having an individual identity can help to promote and give back to society through coming up with designs that help to spread awareness to the rest just like how James Balog did with his photobooks, which this prompt me to further learn and expand on my design identity in hoping that one day it will be recognised.

Manifesto, a public written statement, which serves as a guiding process on how one approaches their design outcome and their design identity. Some manifesto also act as a way to inspire and motivate other designers through a listing of design principals that they can follow. 

Ken Garland’s First Things First, written in 1963 and published in 1964,  was one of the many manifesto that caught my attention. Through the bold and enlarged text size of “first things first”, it emphasis strongly on the will of some past designers who wanted to voice out and stand on their grounds in expanding their skills and experiences to more socially meaningful work–such as street signs, industrial photography and book publication etc, over purely commercial or advertising-driven work. 

First Things First 2000 was later then republished in 1999 by Adbusters Magazine, which was subsequently published in many other magazines and books around the world, where a new era of designers want to re-emphasized the need for socially responsible design and broadened its target from advertising to marketing and brand development. 

Identity is the key to the world, a slogan that our group came up with as a whole after the long mind mapping process, where we felt that having a sense of identity is crucial as we advance towards the future. We came up with this design whereby the word Identity will be the key blades and bittings while the bow will be an earth globe, symbolizing the entire world. A door, symbolizing the future, was drawn to show the process that we need the key to unlock what's ahead of us. 

Having our own design identity comes to play in our studio assignment, whereby we were tasked to work as a pair to come up with a poster design. Based on all of my previous assignments, the color palette that I always go for will be more of black and white and as for the style wise it will always be minimal and structural while my partner will be more vibrant with complex designs. At the start, I felt a bit off as it was not my usual way of working, but we ended up learning and adapting both design styles to come up with a poster design that is both vibrant with a certain structure to it.

I feel that having my own identity as a designer not only helps to showcase to others what design outcome I can come up with, but also allows us to further improve our knowledge by learning from each other. Hence, I am going to stick with the group manifesto as I truly believe that having an identity is the key to the world.

To critically analyze artistic traditions and lineages, we need to combine formal analysis by observing visual elements such as texture, lines and material with contextual analysis like its historical or cultural background. This combination will then further improve our understanding of how artistic ideas evolve or transform within a traditional timeline.

Rubbish FAMzine No. 9: The Unfinished Chronicle of the Chair Ballad, an artwork that me and my pair brought up during the exercise as we really like how this artwork creates bonds between the parents and children by allowing them to experience a hands-on activity to finish up the designer's artwork. This also helps to engage and expands their experience beyond reading which reflect the rarity and care for the product, enhancing its value as a collectible for the family.

Music is Therapy, a poster design for zouk also sparks our interest in how the artwork captures our attention with the use of balance and bright purple/pinkish color theme together with the angelic characters, which also might indicate the type of music that the guest might hear when they are in this club house.

Fernando Zóbel, an artist who caught my attention with one of his photographic collage-Study of the Retiro Park, while we were on a field trip at National Gallery Singapore. Being interested in photography, I love how he chooses to display his photograph vertically, where we can get to see the collages all in one go. His exhibition gave me an insight on how having a good sense of display for photography, will result in elevating the photos to another level.

Having an identity for myself is something that I always work towards everyday. I believe that as long as you treat someone right, good karma will return back to you. I would say that my lifestyle is pretty much filled with mystery, very carefree but at the same time strict whenever it comes to work.

When it comes to design identity, most of my work is done by playing around with grids and the most common color that I always stick to will be black and white, with a touch of bright colors once in a while like red and yellow.

Even though there are many colors that catch the eyes of the viewer due to its striking bright colors, I believe that by adding a different play towards black and white, it will also have the same effect just like the rest of the colors.

This week activities start off by us creating a digital collage, using 5 different words and 5 Images, to describe ourselves before we describe others. Describing others is much easier than describing myself as I were to spend countless minutes thinking about how I want to portray myself to others.

The session ended with us coming up with ideas on how we visualize ourselves as a designer, and a few keywords that stood out to me will be Structural systems, Fun to hang around with and exploring with monochromes, which is something similar to my design identity. 

The day where people say “that is so Keith style", is the day I know that I have become successful in portraying my design identity.

While both thinking styles are vital, they serve different purposes in the cognitive process. Critical thinking narrows down options to reach the best conclusion while creative thinking expands possibilities to explore new frontiers.

This week’s assignment required us to write a short story on some of the social issues that we faced daily, which we will then proceed to discuss as a whole on how critical or creative the writing was talking about these issues.

The number of KPods users have been significantly increasing throughout the period of time and we need stronger law enforcement against it. Video on social media often shows KPods users being turned into a “zombie” like state or worse case scenario, even death.  This case not only targeted adults but even teenagers as young as 14 years old have been seen using it, which might affect their growth and mindset if no one puts a stop to it.

The law enforcement should really start to enforce stricter rules, same as drug trafficking, like long term jail time or worst case scenario death penalty, so as to control and bring down the amount of users to zero.

Bringing creative practice and critical thinking into my design process, whereby I feel that as a designer, what we can do to counter the KPod issue will be coming up with infographics that can spread awareness on the downside and the penalty of using KPods. Placing this infographic on social media or at public transports, also helps to remind commuters daily that Singapore is starting to take a strong stands against those that uses KPods, in hoping to reduce the amount of KPod user.

World of Ideas & Imagination allows me to gain some insights behind a few design fundamentals theoretically, which some themes can even be brought over into other modules such as studio and photography.

Taking week 2, Aesthetics, as a reference whereby we touched on how different elements have their own aesthetics and how different elements work together to bring out a whole new different aesthetics. I begin to pay more attention to the details and question myself on why the designer decided to place those different elements together. 

Linking it back to my studio assignment whereby I need to deliver a set of printed materials along with limited edition collateral for an upcoming exhibition of my chosen designer, Massimo Vignelli. 

I started off by doing some research, both online and offline, about his past artworks and how I can bring over his design styles into the collateral. Known for his minimalist, simplicity and well structured artwork, I decided to stick with a design that plays around with the grid systems which helps to bring out the aesthetics of Massimo Vignelli.

Overall, I would say that World of Ideas & Imagination is useful as it opened up a path for me which shaped me into a better designer through the knowledge of how different design fundamentals were being used, be it in the past or in the current timeline.

Starting off the day by walking through an open studio works that was put up by our year 3 seniors in both diploma and BA courses, one artwork that stood out to me will be the one titled “typing tembusu” whereby the creator snaps photos of the tembusu tree, using the branches as a guide, to come up with an interesting typeface. As I am interested in exploring down the photography path, this open studio works open up my mind to many more possibilities on how I can incorporate photography into my future designs. 

A photography artist Sebastião Salgado, a Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist, where one of his exhibitions, Amazônia, deepen my interest in photography who also changed my perspective towards black and white photography.

"Amazônia a major exhibition by the award-winning photographer Sebastião Salgado (b. 1944, Brazil). It spotlights the Amazon region and its ecosystems coming under the threat of deforestation and climate change, while featuring the voices, portraits, and perspectives of the Indigenous communities who live in – and with – the largest rainforest on the planet." (National Museum Of Singapore, 3 Apr 2025).

Through this exhibition, it incorporates background amazon music together with stunning photography images which enhances the whole experience inside the exhibition itself, bringing us a step closer into the amazon environment. 

As a designer in my ecology, I wish to a create multi-sensory and immersive storytelling images that will not only capture the audience's eyes but also to let the audience experience how each photo was taken at that point of time through different senses like sounds, smell or touch that they can get to interact with while walking down the exhibition.

Learning more about semiotics, where we take a look at how we perceive certain images or signages while decoding the message or intention behind it. Signifiers were also being used in our contextual analysis as part of the exercise when we are decoding an advertisement. 

Bringing semiotics into my photography assignments project 3 - A thousand words, where it challenges me to explore the language of photography and its capacity to communicate through the lens of semiotics. For this assignment, I chose an article which tried to convey the message on how climate change impacted the world, making temperature deadlier and food less reliable.

At first I was clueless as to how I can create visual storytelling images, so I began to look into images from www.worldwildlife.org, which talks about climate change and started to decode it using signifiers and what they are trying to signify. 

One of my favourite photos that I chance upon will be a campaign titled “Lungs” with a tagline: “Before it’s too late”, which was published in France, April 2008 by agency TBWA for WWF.

From the image we can see that the signifier being the lung shaped forest with part of the right side being burned down. This can signify that if the forest continues to be burned down or reduced, the aftereffect will also impact heavily on us too.

Thus, it helps to convey the message on the importance of us saving the tree, which opens up many ideas and inspiration for my upcoming photography submission.

This week we dive into how we can analyze a work of design whereby we focus on the medium and craftsmanship of a product. After watching a video of Kelly Lim, a crochet artist, on how she pursued her dreams for crochet and her artworks, it really shows me the amount of craftsmanship she put into crocheting her products which in return paid her off. 

Moving into group activities, where we need to share on the handcrafted objects that we brought from home and to come up with 2 thematically interesting ways of grouping or categorizing them.

What I really like about this activity is that we get to dive deep into how an object that is less frequently used still holds a significant element when it comes to design and how we can use it to categorize them into different groupings. 

Continuation from last week, bring us on a field trip to Kampong Gelam, where we were tasked to document down 1 design that is connected to last week's grouping and another 3 more designs that I can group together to form a new theme. 

As I begin my walk around Kampong Gelam, I stumble across many fancy light covers which I find quite interesting due to the way they were being crafted. One particular light cover that caught my attention will be the one with a house that is attached with multiple coloured balloons, which reminds me of a movie called UP. Thus, I begin to group 3 unique light covers together to form the theme, play, as It shows how the designer plays around with their designs to make it into unique light covers.

One design that caught my attention, in which I connect it to last week's grouping, memories, will be a wall mural where it plays around with black and white elements, resulting in different compositions. Since I always use Black and White as my primary colours to design, seeing the mural reminds me of the past work that I did. Hence, it holds some memories in me.

Overall, I find this activity quite interesting which makes me more determined to bring the craftsmanship and passion into my favourite module, photography, and to focus on crafting it daily to perfection and hopefully one day the effort will pay off.

This week we dive into aesthetics, whereby we learn how to separate the qualities of an object into “form — how is the object being structured” and “function — what the object or element does”, to get a better feel for the aesthetic of the object itself. We were tasked to walk around nearby coffee shops and capture down a few shop signs that we find interesting which will later be presented to the class. 

For our group presentation, one of the slides that I feel that we did well in presenting will be the slides featuring Chinese cuisines as there are indicators with descriptions to indicate our inputs about the signs. I personally like how simple design or illustration can help to further enhance the aesthetics of the sign. 

An example will be the beauty malatang sign, whereby the designer adds an illustration of a beautiful woman with a bowl of noodle to be accompanied by the word beauty, color choice of blue and red also helps to add a depth of mystery towards the viewer’s eyes. And since it is a Chinese restaurant, the text size used for the Chinese words will be significantly larger than the english word.

Learning more about aesthetics helped me to produce better design outcomes for my studio works, like this poster design for my chosen artist, Massimo Vignelli. Through his artwork, I can see that his aesthetic was minimalist, simple yet visually appealing, which I used as a reference point for my poster outcome. 

Which makes me come to a conclusion, whereby there is always an aesthetics point of view for a subject itself and it is how we perceive the subject to bring out its aesthetics.

We dive deep into Phenomenology, where we use our consciousness and imagination to interpret how we see the subject as. For today’s class activity, I chose to interpret the idea of “time” in a series of images through photography, whereby it shows the before and after effect of how a photographer influenced the way I take my photos.

On start I always felt that images should be filled with colors as it brings out the feeling of happiness, joy and laughter. Hence whenever I take photos, I will just use the grid as a form of guiding path to position my subject, followed by snapping of my shots.

My whole perspective of black and white photography changed when I chance upon photos from this photographer, kaiziehl, on instagram which sparked the start of my black and white photography journey. The element from his photos that caught my attention the most will be the way he plays around with the shadow which not only gives the image a good contrast but also engages us visually.

What I found out about black and white images is that it plays around with the contrast and the surroundings, which puts a strong emphasis on the subject itself. Bringing this concept into my photography project, whenever I take photos outside, I will start to play around with the surroundings (e.g. the sky as a white canvas, walkway as a guiding path) to experiment with different principles of photography.

With the help of my consciousness and imagination, it will definitely help to shape the way on how I will further approach the art of photography.

One of the collaborative projects that I would like to do will be working together with the students from Diploma in Dance. It will be a Collaborative performance in celebration of SG60, where we will take a trip down Singapore’s Memory Lane, connecting visual designs with the various dance movements.

In our collaboration, we will make use of a huge projector screen where visual design will be projected on while the dancers will be at the front. My role will be to work together with the dancers prior to the creation of the design to understand their choreography better. This will provide me an insight on how I can sync the design together with the dancers ensuring that the flow of both parties will go smoothly. 

For my final project, I want to create an environment whereby user will be able to express their thoughts freely as whatever they said inside the space will be kept anonymous. The idea behind this campaign is because I have seen many people break down in real life but once approached they will say that they are fine and move on. With this campaign, I hope that those who are affected will be able to voice out their troubles while letting them know that there are people out there who still care for them.

I would like to work with TOUCH Community Services, especially under Mental and Cyber Wellness as it is quite similar to my final project. How I can aid in this community will be coming out with infographics to further promote the importance of Mental and Cyber Wellness cases that are happening around the world and how others can help in reducing it.

For me, I aim to be a photographer whereby I can capture down wonderful memories of other families and share it to them via printing it out and giving to them as a present. With the values learned from CTS A, it enhance myself as a person with a growth mindset, allowing me to face different challenges along the way, such as time management, setbacks and potential failure.

The values of CTS A can be brought to the rest of the other modules that I have learned and each value varies depending on what task we are being tasked on.

In Studio, values such as Assertion and Conflict, Emotional Intelligence and Collaboration Skills are more commonly used whenever we are required to work in a team. I feel that having the ability to listen and voice out our own opinion, while compromising with the ideas that were being given by others, will definitely help the team in achieving a common goal together. Documentation, together with Facts and Reliable Sources will take place when we are working on our personal Creative Process Journal, CPJ, in making sure that all the sources that we have gathered are authentic and reliable for us to look up and cross reference to in the future.

For the Craft module, I will say that the Growth Mindset plays a huge role in it. Whenever we are given an assignment to work on, it will always be something that is foreign to us. This is where I start to step out of my comfort zone to try out new things while bearing the fact that I need to embrace any failures that are going to come along my way. Be it accidentally merging ink onto the paper or drawing incorrectly, I will always need to think of ways to improvise on the mistake and to work with it.

Photography requires us to have as much trial and error as we progress along the way in order to capture a good photo, while Digital Skills require us to practice and memorize all the shortcut keys that the lecturer has taught us in order to be proficient in the software that we are using. Hence, I feel that not much value from CTS A is being used in these two modules, but nevertheless those values will always be a good practice to uphold.

The word Mindset comes to my mind whenever I think about the Critical Thinking Skills. CTS is something that might seem small but actually plays a bigger part in our daily life. Having a good Mindset actually helped me to have a better understanding on how to work well with others during group projects, be empathic and take in criticism, and lastly learn and adapt from mistakes to further improve on myself.

Little Timothy with a MegaMind. All CTS A values are being stored in the mega mind of Little Timothy, indicating the importance of each value and that we should always uphold it throughout our journey.

Among all the activities that we had, I think creating a monument together as a group will be the most memorable activity for me. This activity puts collaboration skills in play whereby we need to generate and share new ideas together. Since it was the first group project that we were being tasked on, it really made it a memorable one for me as at that point of time, even though we are foreign with each other, it did not stop us from working together.

This activity also requires us to have a good mindset. As we need to work as a team to provide thoughtful inputs on other team members ideas while taking in their feedback and suggesting even more suggestions that will compromise with the rest and hopefully help to spark an idea towards the team monument. This also reminds me of a quote - "None of us is as smart as all of us." by Ken Blanchard, an American author, business consultant and motivational speaker who states that when you surround yourself with great people, it elevates who you are.

Looking back at the activities, what I wish I did better will be to be more proactive. By providing even more in depth suggestions and feedback that will further enhance my team's thinking bubble towards the creation of the monument.

Out of the four aspects that were being shared today, I feel that I am strongest in the "Self-awareness".

Take today's activities as an example, whereby I need to interact and interview with one classmate that the lecturer picks.

Upon finding out that my classmate came from Korea, I started to ask how long she has been in Singapore, is it easy or hard to cope with the sudden change of culture etc. And knowing that Singaporeans tend to talk a little bit faster, I start to slow down my pace and talk slowly so that she can understand what I am talking about, portraying me having self-awareness during the whole discussion.

But on the other hand, one thing that I think I need to improve a little bit more on will be getting better at "Self-management".

Usually when I am given an assignment what I will do is to procrastinate. I will tell myself that "alright I will rest for example until 230pm after which I will start to do the assignments" but what happens once the clock hits 230pm, I prolong the break time by saying "alright 30 more mins" which I feel that in the long run it will affect me and the assignment will start to snowball as the day goes by.

Hence what I start to practice now is to finish my task first before I go to take my break. I feel that if I continue with this good practice habit, It will greatly enhance my Self-management skills in the future.

Collaborative skills enable your team to work well with each other.

The Eight skills your team needs to foster a collaborative environment are open-mindedness, communication, organisation, adaptability, active listening, empathy, conflict resolution, and time management.

For my strengths as a collaborator, what I feel will be that I am open to suggestions, comes with a good listening ear and a team player.

As for my weakness as a collaborator, I will have the fear to voice out my opinion as I am scared that it might overthrow the other party's train of thoughts.

Take today's activities as a reference, we are split into different teams and were tasked to come up with a monument.

At the start we are quite shaky as we were unsure of what to do or what we want to build, but once a classmate start to share about her idea on coming up with a monument that shares about the history of Redhill, rest of the team members agreed on it and starts to do some research about it.

What I feel that I did well is to research and draft out an idea on how our monument is going to look like. But as a team, being able to adapt and allow the other party to improvise on each other's work, is a major key point for us.

Hence, I feel like there is not a need to redesign the monument as it is made from each other's strength and I am sure everyone in the group put their best in it.

Another reference on how collaborative skills were being put in play, will be when I am working in Universal Studio Singapore. Being in the tourism industry, communication with the team members and guests plays a huge role in making sure that the rides run smoothly.

There was once whereby we were facing an issue with the ride itself, which caused the ride to be stopped for a time being. But thanks to the pro-actives of all the team members, we managed to resolve the issue that we had through communication and active listening, which is something I am glad we had.

Before my first ever critical thinking class, what I thought about the course was just like us thinking out of the box for certain situations, but after the first lesson it changed my point of view about the course itself. What I can take away from the first class is that in order to succeed in one's field, one must be able to take criticism and learn from the mistakes and with this attitude, one can surely improve massively along his or her journey.

An example will be whenever our lecturer's are looking through our artwork, they will give us some feedback on how to improve on it. Instead of having the feeling of "why i cannot do it this way", I take in their feedback and begin to amend the mistakes that they pointed out. With this attitude, it not only made me improve on the artwork but also at the same time stopping me from committing the same mistake that I made.

Another pointer that I learned about mindfulness is that sometimes when we are too stressed out in work or project, it's perfectly alright to just step back, take a short 10 min break, let loose of all the stressful emotion and come back with a positive vibe which I think we can bring into our daily life.

There was once where I got too tired as I was working for a couple of hours on my CPJ (Creative Process Journal). I began to take a little break from it by washing up my face and walking around to stretch myself, it really helps me to clear up my mind and at times it even provides me with better ideas or suggestions towards my CPJ that I am working on.
