I rarely use this circle-jerk of a hellsite anymore. But I have a rant I need to scream into the void.
Everyone's entitled to their own opinion on it, and I'm by no means saying mine is correct. But concerning the Oscars thing with Will Smith slapping Chris Rock? I'm not saying Chris was right to make the joke he did, but I do believe wholeheartedly that Will grossly over-reacted. Rather than settle things like adults, he chose to act immaturely. Like a child. By violently assaulting someone.
And how did Chris react? Maturely. Like an adult. Rather than escalating it by hitting back, he took the hit like a champ, and de-escalated with humor and no small amount of grace. Especially impressive given the awkwardness of the moment.
White-knighting is not something to applaud. Ever. For any reason. Doubly so when done violently. Triply so when such violence is enacted over mere words. I hope for Will's sake he's got a good legal team because if Chris decides to sue for assault (and he is fully in his rights to do so), well, the evidence is pretty much all over the internet by this point. From several angles. That being said, I could see Chris choosing to wave it aside. Because, at least compared to the man who assaulted him, he's clearly an adult who thinks before he acts and doesn't let his emotions make him do violent things.
Also, because some people still think Will's some kind of saint for doing what he did, please note he was laughing at the joke along with everyone else before he saw his wife was displeased. And by displeased, I don’t mean crying. I mean as in she was rolling her eyes at the lame joke it was. I personally doubt any noble intent. That's more in line with a man who's trying to save face in a clearly messed up relationship that probably should have ended long ago. That being said, I suppose props should go to Will for attempting to make things work in spite of what she’s put him through
Lastly, and this will prolly get me some hate, but I am fucking tired of the “all women are queens” crowd. Consider the parallels here: Jada humiliated Will in front of the world by admitting to his face, on camera, that she cheated on him. Something Will had no control over. Something that men all over the world are deeply insecure about and terrified of, and rightfully so. Go back and look at the interview. Look at the images and memes of Will barely choking back the tears and pain. They can claim all they want that “we were separated” and that they had an "open relationship”, Will's face told a far different story. And everyone clapped like seals and belched out “GET IT GURL!” and laughed at Will’s pain.
On Oscar night, Jada was similarly humiliated in front of the world, on camera, for something relating to her appearance. Something she has no control over. Something women all over the world are deeply insecure about, and rightfully so. Will had every right to lean back and go "Hey, remember when you aired our dirty laundry to the world? Yeah, this is kinda how that felt." Instead he chose to tarnish his reputation for the sake of a woman who rode his coat-tails and then fucked him over. That’s not to say Jada is talentless, but I think anyone who has an inkling how showbiz works knows damn well she wouldn’t be where she’s at had she not been able to lean on Will’s connections and clout. But most everyone’s applauding Will for slapping Chris so his precious wife didn’t have to suffer a fraction of the indignity she put him through.
TL;DR I feel little sympathy for Chris because the joke was in very poor taste, but I have a greater respect for him than I did before for handling the situation in an adult and mature manner. I hope his career remains stable.
Will, I feel great sympathy for because it’s clear he’s still dealing with the fallout of a rocky relationship that clearly never should have progressed to the marriage stage, but have lost a great amount of respect for because he chose to act like an impetuous child and I hope this doesn’t permanently tarnish his career. I also hope he gets an amicable divorce someday and finds someone who will treat him right and never has to go through another wife fucking some rapper his son’s age.
Jada I feel the least sympathy for because while she can’t help her alopecia, she got a taste, an inkling, of some of the humiliation she put her husband through, and good. 0 respect for someone that brags about cheating on their spouse with someone half their age. Oh that’s right, she let her husband white-knight for her and take a hit to his image so she didn’t have to suffer the indignity she put him through. I hope she is always remembered for what she put Will through.
Couple of addendums:
If you don’t like comedians telling jokes, then don’t watch them. And don’t come at me with that “DON’T MAKE FUN OF PEOPLE” shit. That’s at least half of comedy. If you require a fix of PG wholesome bullshit where no one’s feelings ever get hurt and everybody is friends always, go back to watching pre-school cartoons or Disney or whatever.
If you’re defending violence so long as “the right people” are doing it to “the wrong people” then I pray you never achieve any modicum of power over another human being because every time someone with that mindset gains any form of power, they turn into a petty tyrant. And that is an empirical fact.
“WhY aRe YoU pOiNtInG oUt JaDa ChEaTiNg WhEn ChRiS cHeAtEd ToO?” Because it was an asshole move, he owned up to being an asshole, and most importantly he never bragged about it.
