Seven is a lucky number for the Purple Princess K. Briscoe. The Kansas City native, determined to thrive in an industry of established singers and hitmakers, has taken the slow and steady approach to her career -- she moved from underdog to power player in the span of seven years, working tirelessly through defeat and gaining notoriety and respect from bigwigs in the process. The singer-songwriter left her Kansas hometown in 2004, with a mission to score a signed recording contract. Her family wasn’t fond of her leaving the nest, especially with a daughter in tow, but being the dreamer and believer that she is, K couldn’t resist reaching for her aspirations. Armed with a degree in audio engineering and signature lyrics that are both coquettish and heartfelt, she bid farewell to family and friends who dubbed her cuckoo, set up an in-home recording studio in L.A. and welcomed work writing with producers like Jazze Pha in Atlanta. Her versatile writing abilities, much like her look -- which can be flip-of-the-coin ladylike with purple-tinged tresses and sky-high stilettos or tomboy chic in a fitted cap and kicks –- prove to be her strongpoint. Before K. Briscoe’s venture into solo stardom, she struck pop gold with her production team the Outsyders, when “Womanizer,” a song she crafted, was selected by Britney Spears to appear on her sixth studio album, Circus. “Every song I write is based off my life, even records I write for other people,” shares K., who names Brandy, Diane Warren and Timbaland among those who’ve inspired her professionally. “Growing up in Kansas City, people weren’t really accepting of big personalities. Writing is a way to get my feelings out.” Based off her first solo offering, the Busta Rhymes-assisted banger ‘Dishes,’ her emotionally sensual side is showcased. On the bass-heavy track, the 26-year-old reminds women that standing in front of a kitchen sink is acceptable only after a mutual understanding has occurred. "After you put that thing on me baby/ I'm filled with so much energy," K. Briscoe coos on the tune. "What can I do for you?/ So good ya make me wanna do your dishes." With female songstresses flooding the Internet and iTunes daily, K. Briscoe’s personal approach allows her to ascend to the top of the music industry ladder, whether it’s on the pop circuit or the R&B spectrum. The bold, raw emotion she expresses in songs is what fans will grow to love when hearing her debut album, to be released via Interscope Records. “People are gonna get there are different sides of a woman,” says the Grammy-nominated artist. “We’re not just one thing. People try to define us like, ‘She’s a tomboy, she’s a diva.’ But in our own right, we can be any one of those at any moment. Each one of my songs displays that in its own unique way.” As K. Briscoe readies her forthcoming LP, she continues to rely on the power of positivity and the tenacity that brought her to the forefront of major labels and superstar collaborators in the first place. “Where I am now, I dreamed myself here when I was seven years old,” states the proud mother. “I used to hold my brush as a pretend microphone and sing to the cars passing by. I definitely made it.” K, a lover of sporting Snuggies in the studio and snacking on Ramen noodles, traveled a rocky road to get to her current destination. When naysayers doubted her, she relied on inner strength and her small town work ethic to achieve big city dreams. Her path is a storied one of triumphs and tribulations, yet it’s also one paved with inspiration.
