In every timeline Shinji and Kaworu fall in love to some extent, and befriend each other at Shinji's lowest point, and every time Kaworu sacrifices himself to save Shinji

Kaworu in the Manga is the one Shinji turns to after loosing both Rei and Asuka, and having no one else to turn he befriends Kaworu out of necessity, even expressing his distain for Kaworu, and Kaworu is already madly in love with Shinji and confesses it, and of course as he realizes he's been manipulated by SEELE and NERV just as Shinji had, he makes his request to be killed so that Shinji can continue growing, and Shinji reluctantly follows through, choosing to leave himself alone

Anime Kaworu is kinda in love with Shinji straight (🤨) from start and this Shinji seems more receptive to it, while they don't share a room or the same confession, they share an unspoken love, and just as their last life they must make the same sacrifice, and Shinji is left with Kaworu's blood on his hands.

But Anima is where we get a major difference, this Kaworu stays with Shinji after his death, and follows Shinji through his transformation into Super-EVA, and keeps talking to Shinji, and still trying to help Shinji through it all, being the one still there for Shinji even after Yui's true death

And Rebuild Kaworu is nearly completely different, his first action on earth and his first interaction with Shinji was saving Shinji from the near-3rd impact and with it the future that Shinji desired, and he and Shinji bond over music, learning to play piano together, Shinji approaches Kaworu and hands over what used to be his most priced item and trust Kaworu to fix it, and Kaworu takes away the physical representation of Shinji's guilt (the DSS choker), and he and Shinji's souls become one as they pilot EVA 13 as one, and his last actions is forgiving Shinji for his mistake with the spear, as Kaworu sacrifices himself to save Shinji (not being killed by Shinji's (literal) hands, but still dying to Shinji's actions), and Kaworu even while dead kept watch over Shinji (in Gendo's office)
