Lucy Bentley and I set up an Instagram account for the level 5 students back in January to showcase and celebrate students work and accomplishments in one digital space. It’s going really well but a set tone still needs to be refined in some places.

design for the interior of the folder for my physical portfolio set to wrap around the ten pages. ‘je suis daft’ is set to surround my work as a consequence but due to printing queues this could sadly not be accomplished in the time. this shows i could/should have managed my time better here.

ILLUSTRATION STUDIO: THE ORIGINAL MULTIPLE Here are images taken in the photography studio of my final print for this project a few months ago. Because of the limited size of the shot, I was unable to get into the mass length (ten metres) of the print in. Instead I’ve included the roll of the paper to show that it is longer than shown.

here are images taken to showcase the appearance and function of my gift which i made back in december. the idea behind it is to do with a personal aspiration for the year ahead which was to not bottle things up and instead open up to others. the images show the simple love heart shaped case which (albeit tediously) opens up with a zip along the side. in this case the action of unwrapping the gift coincides with the action of which the gift is set to inspire; revealing something hidden.

here are images which I have taken today to showcase the cloth book i made for my project which discussed the concept of hiding. Although the idea behind the cloth book was less coherent than i had hoped, i am happy with the materiality of the book and the aspect of comfort it brings which links to my project source.

Lucy and I went down to the photography studio a couple of months ago to document our book. Ive selected these final images to best showcase the size and format, the sensory braille aspect, type and constatina style. I intend to use these photos in my summative assessment portfolio.

My project was received with mixed results in the crit yesterday. Although it was said that it was nice to have something physical and something which people can interact with, the main focus hadn’t been honed down enough. I understand this very much as my ideas have jolted around a lot during this project and really I should have decided upon a core concept around week 2 and focussed on that since then. With this project I was doing so much research about the matter of hiding that I didn’t decide about the form of the duvet until about the end of week 4. What I’ve taken from this is that I need to decide much earlier on in projects what the narrowed down subject matter is and make that the main focus for research rather than a whole concept, as the duvet was almost saying too much.

ILLUSTRATION STUDIO: AUTHORIAL PROJECT These images are ones which I took on my phone as Ive been in the process of making the duvet covers. I hadn’t used a sewing machine in about seven years (and even then was quite rusty) so it’s been good to get myself into a process of making which I wasn’t familiar with. The blue side of the duvet with the red arms represents what we are hiding from which is over the top of the subject while they are hiding under the duvet form. The red side with pink figures represents the notion that we are not alone in hiding and that we can stand in the face of fear and rise upwards (hence the outstretched arms). I am making a book to document the duvet being used in situ and as a way to explore my project further. I am planning to make a cloth book because it is coherent in form with the concept of the duvet and lures adults into a false sense of security which brings comforting memories of childhood.

This image photographs the interview questions I left on the wall in my house to be answered by my housemates. The reason I didn’t go for a more ambitious context and focused demographic for my interviews is because I wanted them to be universal and immediate findings. I think if I’d asked a specific group of people for example a class of primary school children, I would have had a too narrow result. This way, I was able to ask those people who I interviewed (housemates, peers and family members) to reflect and compare about how they hid as children and now as have grown older.

Here are the prints I made in response to the concept of hiding. Although I don’t think these prints will play a part in my final outcome, I think I will use them for something else.

Here are monochromatic drawings in response to the interview answers I received. I think the black highlights the fear against the luminosity of the subject hiding. These two are regarding Joe and Tommys’ answers who said  ‘I close my eyes to hide from things that scare me so I can’t see them’ and ‘I often read in books to hide in a fantasy for a while, to live in a world that doesn’t really exist for a few hours’.
