Monday's Dusty Grooves | Curtis Mayfield's Back to the World Coming hot on the heels of Curtis Mayfield’s powerhouse “Superfly” album was his 1973 release of the wonderful Back To The World album. Mayfield's music always had a socially-conscious and political bent to it, but the tracks on Back To The World cranked this conceit up to an even higher degree, largely inspired the increasingly industrial world around him, and the social and environmental concerns that followed it. Since it’s Memorial Day, it would only be right to start my morning ride in my ‘64 Dodge with the titled track “Back to the World”. “Back to the World” has powerful and timely lyrical content mainly dealing with life in the U.S. after the vietnam war which had just ended as the last troops were finally on their way back home. The title track and 1st song on the album is told from the viewpoint of a soldier whose made it back home only to be told that A) The war had not been won and B) Nothing really had changed for the better since he’d left and in many ways was now worse. It’s a very descriptive and chilling realization that now the soldier was in the midst of a another war for freedom of thought and expression “Back In The World”. Enjoy this track as you cruise to your favorite car show, coffee shop, or brunch spot 😊. Specifically, I enjoy this track because Jeff Lorber's magic has successfully reach several generations. The backing track for the song "Rain Dance" has been sampled most notably for the 1997 Lil' Kim song "Crush on You", @lilkimisqueen_ but also for the 1996 Tha Dogg Pound @snoopdogg holiday song "I Wish," the 1997 SWV @officialswv song "Love Like This", the 2013 Ariana Grande @arianagrande song "Right There" and the 2018 Mariah Carey @mariahcarey song "A No No", from Caution. Lorber re-recorded the song, this time with vocals by Irene Bauza, as the song "Rain Dance/Wanna Fly" on his 2010 album Now Is the Time. Auto Fashion | 1971-74 AMC Javelin Pierre Cardin Edition @pierrecardintr @pierrecardinwomen In the early 1970s, American Motors @drive.a.m.c initiated a program to associate its products with well-known fashion designers and companies. There was the Gucci-edition AMC Hornet and the Oleg Cassini-edition AMC Matador, while the wacky AMC Gremlin wore the red tab of Levi's denim. The most sought after of these was the Pierre Cardin-edition AMC Javelin because Cardin @pierrecardintr was the fashion industry's most transcendent figure and this pony car was AMC's standard bearer of sportiness. Cardin's designs were seen not only in clothing but also in personal accessories, restaurants, furniture, and even on a record label.  The décor package was optional for all 1972 and '73 Javelins for a mere $84.95 and included exterior badging. The glittery disco era was dawning when the Cardin-edition Javelin rolled down the assembly line in blue-collar Kenosha, Wisconsin. It's mechanically sound, vaguely quick, and a symbol of decadence from a company that had previously known success only with the dowdy, fuel-sipping Rambler.
