Choice Project
At this point, I am thinking I am going to do:
2 chapters notes 2 blog posts Create a game
I'd really like to create a game based on our reading of October Sky at the beginning of the year (this is the unit where we will teach constructed response writing and MLA format) but I am really struggling with what that looks like over a four week unit and how to embed that in an already packed unit in a way that will be fun and engaging without monopolizing time. I like the idea of diving my students up into rocket clubs/teams and having them earn points for completing various challenges/writing tasks, but that still feels more like gamification than an actual game. Would love any feedback!
I can see where your dilemma is here! I would maybe consider having a mini-game. I am unfamiliar with October Sky, but maybe you could create some sort of game where they take one of the prompts and then they have to go through the writing process (but make each of the steps of the writing process some sort of "quest"). You could also add in some sort of illustration piece and maybe have them compete against each other in small groups? Just some ideas!
