Emerald Elite : House of Serpents
Chapter 3
Softer
I walked into the classroom, my stomach angry with me for being too insecure to eat anything at breakfast. My eyes scanned the room and landed on Cedric, who was sitting in the second to last row, an empty spot next to him. I gathered the confidence and walked over to where he sat. His attention was on a book in front of him, one about magical creatures.
I cleared my throat to catch his attentionâit worked. He looked up at me and his eyes softened, giving me a soft smile. âIs this seat taken?â I asked him. He shook his head before replying, âNo, feel free.â
I returned his soft smile and sat down next to him, setting my bag down beside me. I looked down at his book and raised a single brow before my eyes flickered up to his. âWhat are you reading?â I asked.
He looked down at his book, an amused smile tugging at his lips before looking back up at me. âYouâre a silly one,â he said, letting out a soft chuckle. âItâs The Monster Book of Monsters. I thought it was obviousâwhat other book has teeth?â he added.
I let out a small laugh, heat creeping up my neck despite myself. I tried to make conversation. It didnât land. âI knew that. I just wanted to make conversation. Donât make me feel bad about it,â I joked.
He let out another chuckle. âOh? Didnât realize you wanted to talk to me. You usually try to ignore me as much as you can.â He said it not in a rude way, just in his usual carefree Hufflepuff way.
I gave him an amused but sheepish look before speaking. âYeah, sorry. I just wasnât used to boys having a crush on me, so you kind of freaked me out a bit,â I explained. It was a total lie. I wasnât freaked out by boys liking me, but stillâŚI needed an excuse.
He stayed silent and stared at me. Not in the intense way Iâm used to. It was soft. Almost sweet. A small smile on his lips. I held the eye contact, a small subconscious smile tugging on my own lips.
For a second, Lorenzo didnât exist.
I was here, in the present moment with Cedric. The feeling was familiarâwarm, light, settling somewhere deep in my chest. Dangerous in a way I couldnât quite place.
Before my stomach growled. Loudly. As if punishing me for not feeding it earlier. My smile faltered immediately. Oh. My. Gosh. I felt my cheeks flush as I quickly looked away.
Poor Cedric tried not to laugh but ultimately failed, hiding his laughter behind his hand. Itâs like the damn fates were working against me. I turned forward and faced the frontâno way was I looking Cedric in the eyes ever again.
After maybe a whole damn minute of cracking up, Cedric finally caught his breath and looked at me again. âYou hungry?â he asked, as if it wasnât obvious. I sat there stiffly, cheeks red. âNo shit,â I replied. I got pretty defensive when I was embarrassed.
But Cedric didnât seem to bat an eye at my response. Instead, he smiled and let out an amused chuckle before reaching into his bag, pulling out a small muffin in a little bag, and handing it over to me just as Hagrid walked in to begin class.
I looked down at the small muffin and then up at him. He raised his brows slightly, as if expecting me to take it. So I did. âThanks,â I said softly.
He smiled and gave me a small wink before turning to look at the front of the class where Hagrid stood. My soft smile returned as I stared at him, the muffin in my hand. I looked down at the muffin, then back at him.
Maybe this was what moving on was supposed to feel like. Easy. Soft. Nothing like what Lorenzo was doing at allâwell, not really.
