It's oppression Olympics. It's needing to prove that they're so damn morally pure because they're the only one to suffer the most in the whole wide world and anyone else is lying. It's a refusal to accept that there is no virtue in suffering, no moral purity in being oppressed. It's proof they never unlearnt their bigotry, they just decided they were exempt because of their identity.

It was never about anyone else but them. And that's the problem, they refuse to listen to or try to understand anyone who doesn't agree with them.

When discourse comes around about the apparent “lack” of transmasculine voices and contributions in history as compared to transfeminine ones, I always think of this diagram:

Survivorship bias is such a huge factor when it comes to which queer narratives and stories survive the march of time. For transmasculine people, the challenge has always been not only overcoming anti-queer sentiments of the day, but also contending with a lack of legal and societal personhood that put them in a position where telling their story- or even discovering themselves- was literally impossible. The level of risk involved in even just exploring your identity in secret, let alone finding community and recording your experience, was astronomically high when you were considered another person’s property, largely uneducated and expected to not communicate with anyone other than your husband, relatives and children. I’ve seen mentioned how many societies outlawed and punished gay (mlm) relationships but not lesbian ones, but the rather obvious conclusion to that is because it was seen as such a non issue that it was beneath notice, due to the lack of cis women’s ability to exist outside of the constant control and supervision of her male relatives. To say they were “privileged” for not being legally barred from sapphic relationships would be silly, because legally speaking they would’ve been at the total mercy of their owners (male relatives) if discovered, which served as punishment in itself.

All of this maps pretty cleanly onto trans dynamics of the time, especially since the distinction between sexuality and gender was often considered nebulous or nonexistent. Like gay cisgender men, transfeminine people came back riddled with bullet holes- but they came back (aka, built community and survived through the historical record). For transmasculine people, however, very few ever did, and of those we can point to their identities are the subject of fierce debate even to this day. It’s always “brave WOMAN dresses as man to escape oppression”, never “trans man gets the right blend of luck and ingenuity to tell his story”. Because those who didn’t never came back, never even got out the door in the first place. All of that in mind, it’s insanely cruel- and ahistorical- to say that we “never contributed anything” to queer history, when history was barred from our contribution from the moment we were born.

Fucks me up to think about how trans men’s rights to things like education, voting, employment, etc. are all dependent on cis women having the same rights but trans men’s rights to healthcare access (including gender affirming care and gynecological/reproductive care), protection from abuse (aka access to shelters for DV victims), or even basic inclusion in activism, legal protections, and even fucking language, are not even a little bit cis women’s problem despite cis women often seeing us asking for these things as somehow an attack on them.

I can vote in favor of legalizing abortion. That’s awesome. But they can easily write the law in such a way that only if you’re legally female do you get to have access to abortion. Meaning trans men who legally changed their gender marker can be denied. Or if they aren’t then insurance companies can decide not to cover it because of the aforementioned gender marker while they would have no problem providing coverage for a cis woman. And when trans men try to draw attention to this and beg to be included so that we can have the same rights as cis women, we’re making a women’s issue about men and we’re raging misogynists and gender traitors and TMRAs. Because god forbid we consider that maybe a man might need an abortion too.

A lot of people could benefit from realizing that the vast majority of the time, when someone says a space or resource is “AFAB only”, the thought that this might include trans men or nonbinary people who look masculine has not even remotely crossed their mind. When most people say “AFAB”, they are imagining cis women—and maybe, as an afterthought, nonbinary people that they are able to mentally categorize as basically cis women. Certainly, they never imagine someone who looks like or is a man. Any intersex person who doesn’t look like a cis woman or who didn’t experience growing up as a girl, definitely the furthest thought from their mind by a hundred miles.

Transmasc erasure is the reason I wasn’t able to transition earlier.

I got on T at 20 years old. This is not the first time I tried to transition. When I was 13, I went to a highly respected institution for transgender youth to get on puberty blockers and hormones. My two providers did not know what a trans man was. They offered me a side-clasp binder off amazon in the wrong size that fucked up my ribs because they gave me incorrect guidelines on how to wear it. They refused to put me on any medication until I could prove to them that I wasn’t just confused. They never put me on any medication and always told me that being a girl is hard and I couldn’t just run away.

These things have real consequences for real vulnerable people.
