who the hell wouldnt walk out if your OWN FATHER told you that he thought you would spy on the family for fudge if he asked
THAT family, the one percy has tried so hard to look after, the one percy wants to not struggle financially anymore and to raise the weasley’s name’s reputation, the one in which he was expected to be responsible for his younger siblings and did so even if he was mocked and doubted because he obviously loved them so much?? THAT FAMILY??
no because youre freshly 19, youve already been fired unfairly after being overworked and then scapegoated, youve worked your whole life and want your dad to be proud of you and you get offered one of the most prestigious positions possible, why the hell would you decline
and yeah, fudge is sketchy as hell and arthur isnt wrong to warn percy, but who the hell insinuates that your prodigious son who ran a whole ass department and you KNOW how hard he has worked and how much this means to him that he isnt “good enough” or “deserving” of the job
like yes, in the context, percy is very young, but what pisses me off is people forget percy is really fucking smart.
he went into his first job and assistant to a reputable department head (keep in mind, no political play was here, he was legitimately hired out of hogwarts) he got 12 OWLS, and he scored perfect grades in his NEWTS. (not even BILL is confirmed to have scored perfect grades, but percy explicitly HAS). Percy likely has a perfect record, he was Head Boy (and prefect, which again meant he had experience with management and negotiating), not to mention the fact that he likely had stacks of extra curriculars and work experience. keep in mind, percy did all this on his own merit, because people forget he legitimately just didnt want his family to struggle financially anymore.
so yes, political reasons were at play here, but even then, percy is more than qualified and competent to be hired??
like is it SO hard to congratulate your son without nitpicking, can you be even SLIGHTLY proud of him??? at least celebrate with him first before you undermine all his hard work and his joy??? like, percy was genuinely seeking praise from his corrupt bosses who did not have good intentions in mind because he couldnt get any of that from his own father.
and the cherry on top that wouldve hurt the most is the inherent expectation that he would betray his family on principle. keep in mind, this is coming from his DAD, the man that RAISED him. not only is he not proud of you, he expects the worst of you and doesnt even trust you. he doesnt even consider the fact that percy could give information, he doesnt even fathom that as an option. and hearing that from your own father??
no because instead of painting trusting the ministry and fudge as a problem, PERCY is centred as a problem, and i honestly believe thats what drove him away for good.
he’s been alien among his family for years, mocked and belittled for his personality and dismissed as uncaring- but to hear that from your own father?? the one that is supposed to be nice and warm?? no yeah because if he’s acting that way and that’s what he really thinks, imagine what percy would think about his siblings who are much more overt with their mockery??
moral of the story: im tired of people pretending that the argument was about dumbledore or the ministry. maybe it was to arthur, but for percy it was literally just wanting his dad to fucking trust him for once. yeah, percy wasnt right in some of the stuff he said, but he sure as hell wasn’t wrong for leaving with the way he was being treated, this was literally just a confirmation of his fears of how his family thought about him and it pisses me off that it was just swept under the rug.
