BACKGROUND.Â
Being born smack bang in the middle of the Dawson clan has its pros and cons, but Kat has always been the type of person to see the sunny side of things. She loves her family and the way they grew up even if they didn't always have the best of the best - and truthfully, the chaos of having eight siblings suited her just fine. She was the sort of kid that always had to be doing something, up at the crack of dawn and preferably out in nature, and she could always rope at least one other person into her hobby of the week.
Her interests never stayed in one place for too long, until she reached middle school and uncovered a love of creative writing. From then on it was pretty common to find Kat with her nose in a book or pen and journal in hand, reading or writing and sketching every idea that came to mind. Throughout high school it was her plan to go to college and study Creative Writing, but her grades prevented her from getting much in the way of financial help, and so after graduating she worked a variety of odd jobs in order to save up money.
In her spare time she still loved to write and would put every idea on paper, even the little ones that turned out to be bad, because in her mind it was all part of the creative process. And in the end it was one of those small, bad ideas that spawned a moderately successful children's book series when Kat was 20. It wasn't the type of book that made chart lists or put her name on the map, but it gave her enough money to go to college, and so she left Wolford for Knoxville to study.
During that time she continued to write and hired an agent in hopes of publishing more, but the pressure of college seemed to dry up the well of ideas that had once swirled round her mind. Whatever she did manage to get out was continually rejected for one reason or another and her grades tanked. The joy Kat had once found in writing all but disappeared under the glare of perfectionism from professors and publishers, and in the end she dropped out of college and returned home severely disillusioned.
Back to working odd jobs and with no idea what she truly wanted to do next, Kat left it up to fate to guide her path. A few months later the Nightshade Bed & Breakfast came on the market, and the slowly dwindling royalties Kat still received turned out to be just enough to buy the place. There was plenty of criticism to be heard when she made the purchase, what with her lack of experience and the impulsivity of the decision, but she listened to none of it. The decision felt right at the time, and she'd always been a fast learner. How hard could it possibly be?
The first year was a huge learning curve for Kat, but eventually she got her bearings and started to enjoy running the place. The rotating cast of guests keeps her busy and there's always something to fix or change or figure out, and someone to have an interesting conversation with.
HEADCANONS.Â
Kat turned one of the B&B's downstairs rooms into a library, and it mostly features books that she's collected over the years. Guests are free to borrow any they like but occasionally may come across places where Kat has doodled or underlined or written in the margins.
Her personal style is somewhere between grunge and cottagecore, but almost always practical. She's a big fan of overalls, earth tones and flannel. Chunky black boots are her staple footwear.Â
Some might call Kat a terrible gossip, and they'd be correct. She loves to know the ins and outs of drama and while she usually stays well out of it herself, she's not above stirring the pot a little from the sidelines.Â
Ever since purchasing the B&B Kat has not taken a break from renovations. Technically most of the things she does aren't strictly needed, but she likes the change of pace and finding new things to spruce up, even if it's as small as rearranging furniture. The one thing completely off the table is modernisation - she's determined to keep its quirk and charm.
If not at the B&B Kat can usually be found hiking in the woods or rummaging through a garage sale for strange knick-knacks to use in craft projects or display as decoration.Â
WANTED CONNECTIONS.Â
old & new friends - thereâs a lot of scope on this one because kat is fairly easy to get along with. she can be a bit flighty as a friend and sometimes misses plans with no warning due to distraction or just plain forgetfulness. maybe those who have known her for so long are used to that and give her some leniency or on the flip side theyâre getting sick of it and starting to create some distance.Â
long term guest - someone who maybe in the past or currently was a guest at the b&b for a while. if they were new to town kat wouldâve shown them around and tried her best to get them settled, and if they were already a wolford resident who needed alternative housing for whatever reason she wouldâve gone the extra mile to make them more comfortable.
employees - although she tries to do as much as she can on her own thereâs just a little too much for one person to handle, and some things sheâs just not good at. a cook would be the main thing but she would also look to hire part time front of house staff and/or a housekeeper.Â
garage sale buddy - kat likes looking for strange and unusual things at garage sales or antique shops and would be happy to have someone else along for the ride. be prepared to participate in games of who can find the cheapest weird item.
craft buddy - someone who does crafting with her on a weekly-ish basis. kat flits between different things and has a frankly gargantuan mountain of supplies to use. mostly she just likes having someone else around to chat with while they do their own thing. probably displays their work in the b&b.
ex(es) - katâs had a few relationships, none of which lasted. sheâs a little bit of a commitment-phobe and was probably the one to end the relationships. could have ended on good or bad terms.
