its so sad to see how the federation capture changed both juan and aldo. Almost like they switched places, but that is too much of an oversimplification to describe what happened to them.
Juan after being isolated for a week and being beaten, is let go with no warning or explanation. He tries to go back to living his normal life from before the capture. Being "second" in charge of the north's home. Living life all passive and orderly like before. Having his special little days of the week of silly fun, staying safe indoors, opening a new shop, attending a wedding. And he just can't have fun anymore because of what he went through. Fearing any guards, or workers associated to the federation. People try to comfort him, but he can't relate to them anymore like the old juan used to. He was changed irreversibly for no fault of his own. He was simply leverage against aldo and got hit in the crossfire. So, he starts grasping at things to give his "change" meaning, getting evidence of it happening, teaming with the rival faction to find more about the federation, finding the location of where his torture happened, and even going as far to prepare to go there himself.
Aldo on the other hand was stubborn and a thorn to the federation. He did not fuck with the workers and even less Cucurucho. He hated them from the very start. Put his entire effort into wanting to tear them down and was so very loudly opposed to them. Cucurucho, after breaking aldo's esteem far enough, showed him something that scared him so bad that he lost all will to fight. He was released and became kind to the workers, almost sympathetic towards them. He began to humanize the federation rather than seeing them as monstrous beings. Anyone that came to Aldo to continue efforts against the federation like they used to were instead told to stop looking because there is nothing to find. A complete 180 from the Aldo we once knew.
And now juan and aldo can't be any more different despite facing the same thing at the same time. Bumping heads because one wants to enjoy the little peace they have left for the sake of protecting his family while the other cannot go back to that false peace knowing something much more terrible could happen to his family.
