Emma nodded slowly, a smile creeping onto her face as her tears continued to flow, her voice trembling when she spoke, not much louder than a whisper. “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you.”

Tears overflowed and his smile finally emerged as he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close and kissing her forehead. "I love you, Emma. So much."

“Igor..” Taking the ring he had gotten her for Christmas off of her right hand, she held it out to him with a reassuring smile, her voice gentle but firm as she repeated herself. “Ask me again.”

He took the ring and moved so that he was on one knee. "Emma Vanity, will you marry me?"

"You’re the girl who’s always there for me, you understand me. You make me laugh, you make me cry," he chuckled, sniffing, "You’re beautiful. So special and you don’t even realise."

Emma found herself smiling softly, tears continuing to stream as she slowly stood up, moving so that she stood in front of him, a weak yet genuine smile on her face. “A-ask me again.”

"Ask you? I- I don't think I can..." his frown felt carved into his face, he was unable to reciprocate her smile.

He lifted his head enough to glance at her before looking at the wall in front of him. “Then why? I- I don’t know what to do.” He said, his voice cracking a little.

The look in his eyes broke her, and she clamped down hard on her bottom lip. “I-I panicked. I just… why me?” She whispered the words, her eyes wide and full of pain. Her leaving ultimately came down to her old insecurities resurfacing, her belief that no-one would ever truly love her making her see the proposal as a sick prank, though she could now see that was not the case.

"It's always been you." He murmured, still gazing at the wall, wishing that he didn't have to be having this humiliating conversation. Rejection hurt more than any offensive spell.

He heard her come in and sit near him but he couldn’t bear to lift his head and look at her. “What did I do wrong?”

Emma was silent for a moment, taking a few deep breaths to calm herself before hand. “Nothing. You did nothing wrong.” She spoke in hushed tones, her eyes trained on him, willing him to look at her. “Igor, I..”

He lifted his head enough to glance at her before looking at the wall in front of him. "Then why? I- I don't know what to do." He said, his voice cracking a little.

It had all happened so quickly, but Emma was gone. He didn’t know where, or why, but evidently it was because she didn’t love him in the same way. What a fool he’d been. He’d ruined everything. He gritted his teeth, fighting back tears. Thankfully everyone around him were so busy celebrating and singing that they hadn’t noticed Emma apparate away or that he was probably about to explode. He ran through the crowd, pushing and shoving any obstacles out of the way, heading straight back to the flat. He opened the door, slamming it behind him, letting out a shout of frustration before sliding down against the wall, holding his head in his hands.

Emma didn’t know why she had left, though knew now that she was stupid for doing so. The last few minutes had been a blur, and she mentally scolded herself for the way she handled it. She just panicked, had been left unable to accept the fact that Igor felt the way he did, even though she had been waiting years to hear that question pass his lips, it no longer seemed real. She had been burying how she felt for so long, ignoring the pain that came with just being friends because it beat not having him at all, but now she doubted she’d even have him as a friend, because once again she’d managed to fuck things up. First Phineas, Now Igor, you’re on a roll, idiot. At some point she begun to cry, the slam of the front door alerting her to that fact. She was silent for a moment, bracing herself, when she realised Igor wasn’t coming into the room. He doesn’t know you’re here. Should she apparate? Leave him alone? No. Cautiously, Emma made her way to the hallway, leaning against the wall a few feet away from him, one arm wrapped across her stomach, her other hand curled into a fist and covering her mouth as her tears continued to stream. Never in her life had she seen him so broken, and it was all her fault.
