This was the perfect food manga for his shelf, but those scenes had to appear and make him reconsider.

A whole new world opened up before him as he stepped inside and Yu understood many things and nothing all at once. Besides guitars and basses, there were some drums and keyboards, but those weren’t relevant for their expedition today.

“So we pick out some stuff and then I help you out with the song.” He nodded his head like he was an experienced professional. “I’m not confident in my... bass lines, so I hope the song doesn’t sound terrible when we do our... what is it called... informal jam session?”

Yet he had forgotten like a fool.

He didn’t bring the book with him because it would have added a bucketful of salt onto Naoto’s metaphorical wounds. For months, she kept it to herself and never mentioned a word. Why had she gone along with it? Why hadn’t she spoken up?

But it still was his fault for forgetting.

“I was going to open with an apology but I don’t think it would carry any weight,” he said, then handed her a can of vending machine coffee, as if it would placate her. “So... can we talk about it? Discuss my shortcomings in a healthy, not-too-judgemental way? Then you can criticize me for being an imbecile for forgetting you and-”

He cut himself short and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

“Please?”

Summer always gives me the itch to do test of courage threads, since this is commonly done in the summer and apparently this is the season when the land of the living and dead intersect closely at this time. Explains a lot.

He almost thought Naoto would be excited, but all he saw was disinterest and annoyance, a waste of time. Yu glanced at her again. As usual, he couldn’t tell what she was thinking, but he suspected there was a bit of a foul air hovering around her.

Maybe he needed to say something to break the tension.

“You know, when I was a kid, I knew someone who loved to play detectives and phantom thieves. I was caught pretty quickly whenever I was the thief... Not that I was any better as the detective.”
