A Mummyâs Secret
Prologue
Aimsey ran her fingers over her brotherâs journal, a thick layer of sand over the leather bound cover. She swiped it off, the grains falling to the ground with a soft shhhh sound. She stared at the cover where her brother had branded âDocuments on the Mummy.â She raised a brow at the peculiar title for a simple journal.
âAimsey, please come along. Your brotherâs things have been tucked away into a local storage unit until we can get the family together to ration his things.â Her eldest brother, Derrick, spoke. His tone indicated that he was growing more irritated the longer he had to stand there and watch her examine what he thought was a stupid journal filled with more of his brotherâs feelings.
âAnd what of his will?â She asked softly, knowing her family didnât actually give a damn what he wanted in his death. But she was determined to see it through properly.
âThere will be no talk of-â
âAh, Miss Eisenhaur, is it?â A tall man dressed in a suit smiled, his teeth perfectly aligned and pearly white. She raised a brow, immediately suspecting him of being fake somehow.
âI am she.â She confirmed, folding her hands delicately in front of her as she gave him a once over. âAnd who might you be?â
âItâs a pleasure to meet you, Miss Eisenhaur. My name is Hayden Montgomery. I was your late brotherâs lawyer. I was told to present his will to you and you alone.â The man answered.
âAh. So youâre the Mr Montgomery that I always heard good things about. I trust that he wrote his will wisely?â She gave him a once over again, noting the confidence with which this man carried himself. His blue eyes pierced her own.
âI am. Youâve heard of me?â
âMy brother only ever spoke fondly of you. Youâve been a good friend to this family, Mr Montgomery.â She gave a curt nod, ignoring Derrick who was steaming mad in the corner of her brotherâs old library.
âPlease, call me Hayden. Your brother was a good friend to me. Itâs only right.â He smiled charmingly. Even though he had such a charming smile, his eyes said he knew something that she didnât. Something that she wanted to know. Ached to know.
âShall we go somewhere and discuss my brotherâs will, then?â She asked softly, indicating that she didnât trust Derrick enough to let him hear any information. She didnât wanting the rest of the family to know just how rich her brother had been.
âWhy donât we go grab a coffee? We can talk over the general details there.â Hayden suggested. She smiled gratefully.
âThank you, Hayden. Youâre a godsend. If youâll allow me to grab my bag, we can go together.â She offered, not quite trusting that her brother wouldnât do something stupid, like murder the poor guy before she could gain access to the will.
âPerfect. Shall I wait here, then?â Hayden asked, hands stuffed into the pockets of his suit pants.
Aimsey glanced at Derrick, whose eyes gleamed with murderous intent. She chuckled nervously. âPerhaps you should accompany me, actually.â She said evenly, meeting Haydenâs gaze. She conveyed a message of concern through her eyes, then glanced pointedly at Derrick again. Hayden understood immediately, giving her a nod.
âIâll accompany you, then, Miss Eisenhaur.â
âPlease, call me Aimsey.â She smiled, extending her arm to him.
He looped his arm with hers and they walked up the grand staircase towards her own living quarters that had been separate from her little brotherâs.

Into the Waters
Thunder ripped through the air, its ground-shattering sound spreading like a wildfire. It surrounded Koralis as she stared off into the ocean again. In the distance, she could see the dangerous storm that was looming just over the horizon. The sun was beginning to set. Which mean she needed to be going inside if she wanted to avoid the things that lurked silently in the dark. Things that no mere mortal ever came back from. At least, not sanely. Lightning cracked across the sky, starting to strike too close for Phoebeâs comfort.
âSis! Come inside. You could get struck by-â Before her little sister had a chance to finish, there was a bright flash of light. One that was unmistakeable. A lightning strike. Right next to Koralis, who now stood ramrod straight, eyes wide. Her left arm stung, as if it had been burned to the third degree. That sting was spreading in a slow, torturous manner that had tears springing to her eyes despite her eerily calm expression.
âPhoebeâŠâ she swallowed thickly. âI canât move.â She barely managed to get the words out right as another lightning strike hit. Curse that beach for being so damn flat! And curse the lightning for not going for the umbrellas scattered haphazardly across the length of the shore!
âOh my god! MOM! MOM! KORALIS HAS BEEN STRUCK BY LIGHTNING!â She could hear her sister yelling, but couldnât really react. The electricity was spreading all throughout her body, paralysing her in a way that allowed her to move, but kept her from being able to get to safety quick enough. Her muscles were tense. She felt like her brain was going a mile a minute, thrashing around her skull in such a violent way, she was sure her head could have split right open!
âK-Koralis, baby! Youâre going to be okay! Iâm going to get you to the hospi-â
âA hospital isnât going to save the human.â A masculine voice spoke, his tone bored and tired. âItâs always the white ones out here doing this. Playing with lightning is not something to take lightly.â Koralis could feel a manâs hand graze her bare shoulder blades. She hissed, but thatâs all she really could do. âLet me treat her. And when she comes back, sheâll be good as new.â His voice held an alluring, convincing undercurrent. One that would effortlessly pull you in, should you be unaware of the world he came from.
âAnd why would I, a witch, ever entrust my daughter to a siren? I will *not* have my daughter be taken into the waters. She doesnât deserve such a heartless life as that!â Her mother stepped forward, slapping his hand away from her. Koralis could feel the burn returning from where his hand had partially healed it. She whimpered audibly, slowlyâtoo slowlyâturning to the man. She gave the man a pitiful excuse of a nod, hoping to have some semblance of relief.
âGood thing for your daughter is⊠she doesnât need anyoneâs permission but her own.â The masculine siren peered down at her, tilting his head for a moment in thought. âDo you want me to take the pain away?â
âYâŠes.â Her throat hurt too much to speak. She felt like a deep fried churro laid out in the afternoon sun in a Texas summer. Her internal temperature was that of an oven after having cooked the family thanksgiving turducken.
âKoralis, baby, you have no idea what youâre agreeing to!â
âYouâreâŠ. for..gettingâŠâŠ. Iâm aâŠ. witchâŠ. too.â She swallowed, begging for the itch in her throat to go away. She needed to speak. She needed to tell her mother to stop worrying about her and the sea man or whatever he was to get her fixed up already!
âItâs settled, then. Koralis Mayer, you will be hereby taken by the sirens for healing purposes. Your mortal rights permit you to travel back here once your healing is complete. Any further rules and requirements will be explained once you have arrived in the designated areas for your operation to begin.â The manâsiren?âspoke to her in a professional manner. She could only nod. âGreat. Now all you need to do is step into the ocean with me. I will guide you the rest of the way.â He extended his hand.
Koralis didnât hesitate a second, taking his hand into hers.
Into the waters she went. Would she be seen again? Only time would tell.

Sirenâs Call Pt.2âs Song
Sirenâs Call
It was late in the evening when Koralis first laid her eyes upon the sea. Just beyond its chaotic waves was a masculine figure. One that seemed to beckon her out into the treacherous waters. Someday, she thought, someday Iâm going to swim out far enough to have a conversation with whoever it is. Before she could work up the courage to step into the water, a hand grasped her shoulder.
âKora?â Her little sister peered up at her with curious eyes. âMomâs been calling your name for a little while. Says dinnerâs ready.â Her sweet, tiny voice echoed in her mind, not sounding quite right. âThe sea has entranced you again.â Her sister frowned.
âIâm alright, Phoebe. Iâm just⊠searching, is all.â
âYes⊠we all are aware of what youâre searching for.â Her sister sighed, remorseful. âUnfortunately for you, thereâs nothing to find. Now letâs go eat something, yeah?â Her sister wrapped her small hand around Koralisâ dainty wrist, gently tugging her toward the beach house that the little family was staying in for temporary.
âDid you not see the man in the water?â Phoebe frowned.
âI did.â Koralis looked down at her sister, as if waking from her little spell. âThat, dear sister, was not a man. But a creature of the water. An ancient thing that does not care for humans.â
âNo. It was a man.â Wasnât it? He looked like a man. Perhaps maybe a little different. Strangely alluring. But certainly a man! Creatures of the water simply didnât exist. âYour fairytales are just that, Phoebe. Fairytales.â
âYouâll be wishing youâd listened later tonight.â Her sister warned, filling her own plate up with the very delicious food their mother had worked hard to make that evening.
If only Koralis believed her sister. It would have saved her from the events that were bound to follow. A gaze, lingering too long. A caress, strong enough to lead even the toughest men to their watery grave. A promise, important enough to last an eternity.
