As I get ready to board the plane back to Miami, I am filled with so many emotions. Happy to be in my own bed, sad that the turn up is officially over, but most importantly I'm feeling inspired. These past few days spent with TFA corps members, alum and staff have been nothing short of amazing! Being surrounded by people who genuinely want to be apart of creating solutions to education inequality rather than just complain about it, is an experience I won't soon forget. Dear Daddy, Today marked 10 years since you've been gone but today wasn't like the past 9 January 12ths I've experienced. For the first time I didn't spend the entire day fighting back tears. For the first time in a long time I was happy and joyous on this day. It could have been because I was at work and my kids keep me busy or because my schedule was full and I didn't have much time to be in my head. Deep down I think the real reason is because as I get older I am starting to realize that you wouldn't want me to be sad or crying over you. You wouldn't want me to stop my life to mourn your death because you said it best "death doesn't stop life". I know you are looking down on me and smiling at all I have accomplished this far and all that I have cooking up for the near future. I long for my dad but I know you are always and forever in my smile, my work ethic, my caring nature and in my heart. Still missing you like crazy old man. Say hi to grandma, Mykia, and Tupac for me. At first glance it looks like what a regular classroom should look like but this picture represents so much more. For some of my scholars this was the first time expressing their views and for others it was their first time being heard. However, for all of them, it was a shocking realization of what's to come. Through a critical analysis of Gettysburg Address, Letters From A Birmingham Jail and Black Lives Matter they discussed, debated and came to the conclusion that the world, as jacked up, confusing and wonderful it is, is theirs for the taking. I don't know how that experience is for them but watching those wheels start to turn was heart warming for me. #SocialConsciousnessIsPartOfTheJob #TeacherPost #WhenTheJobGoesSoRight
