Learn Portuguese.
Seriously. Youāll need it in Brazil. Not many people speak English.
Itās not like I did a deep dive into the language. I just learned enough to get around. I know Spanish, but trust me - itās not enough in Brazil.Ā
Some essentials:
- Numbers 1-500. If you know numbers in Spanish, then learning numbers in Portuguese should be a breeze. Theyāre similar enough. You need to know how much you owe vendors.Ā
- Greetings. Oi, tudo bem, bom dia, boa tarde, boa noite, tchau.
- Thank you. Obrigada/obrigado.
- Do you speak English? VocĆŖ fala inglĆŖs?Ā
- How much is it? Quanto custa?Ā
- Food. Learn as many food and drink words before you go.Ā
- Where is the ____? Onde fica a/o _____ ?Ā
- A little bit about yourself. Most people will want to know why youāre in Brazil and where youāre from. Estou de ferias. Iām on vacation. Eu sou dos Estados Unidos. Iām from the United States. Eu sou jornalista. Iām a journalist.Ā
You should also learn basic Portuguese pronunciation so you can read things off menus without sounding totally gringo.Ā
