Listen, I love you. It's that clear, that simple. And I know sometimes I can be a disappointment, that I rarely know what I want or think before I act, but you should know that in half a lifetime of spectacular messes, you are the very first thing that's felt right.

âThe people who believe theyâll be happy if they go and live somewhere else ⌠learn it doesnât work that way. Wherever you go, you take yourself with you.â
â Neil Gaiman
âI think you lost all interest in this world. You were disappointed and discouraged, and lost interest in everything. So you abandoned your physical body. You went to a world apart and youâre living a different kind of life there. In a world inside you.â
â Haruki Murakami, 1Q84
ââThe truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.ââ

âAnd here you are, twenty-one, twenty-three, twenty-sixsevennine, a two before your age and a zero in your mind. Grown, they say, but growing you are. Adult, they warn you, act like it, but you just learned how to become a catastrophe and now you donât know whether youâre a bonfire, the roar of a hurricane or the sobbing of the sea at night. Youâre so painfully young and the world thinks you old over the fear nesting where feathers were supposed to sprout by now. It hurts, love. I know it does. Everythingâs so large and ancient and full of years, or itâs younger and glinting with more ferocity already than you think you could ever be. And you feel like your era has passed, mouth purple from biting into the air that is all breath and no answers, but listen. Thereâs no path. Thereâs no siren when you stop to reach for the petals of a flower youâve been looking for since you were a child. Thereâs no punishment for a pen in your shy fingers and paper that was crafted just to hear your words. There are so many lovers waiting for you, lovers made of flesh and bones or ink or music. There are entire continents of dust waiting to be left in your wake, and it doesnât care what youâre coming for. It just knows that one day, one day, it gets to rise around your steps. Youâre so lonely that it tears you apart, and youâre so painfully young and afraid but love, you are only just growing. The stars are lovely tonight, donât you think? Youâll make it. Thereâs enough time to come.â

âthe first time i fall for you, i am seven. i see the punch coming too late to stop it, but i can keep you out of the way. i can let it hit my shoulder. i can be the one who falls on the scratchy pavement. i wish my knuckles werenât so bloody, but your lips are split and your nose is bleeding, and you are still smiling at me, so it doesnât matter, really. the second time i fall for you, i am sixteen. i see the heartache coming too late to stop it, but i can keep you out of the way. i can let it hit me in the gut. i can be the one who falls with my heart in my throat. i wish my blood wasnât beating so hot, but your eyes are warm and bright and happy, and you are still laughing with me, so it doesnât matter, really. the last time i fall for you, i am twenty-three. i see the shot coming too late to stop it, but i can keep you out of the way. i can let it hit the shield in my hands. i can be the one who falls out the broken train. i wish your fingers didnât wrap so easy round a trigger but my fingers are calloused in all the wrong places, and you are still reaching for me, so it doesnât matter, really. it feels just the same every timeâ slow, sudden, breathtaking: all i can hear is my pulse screaming in my ears all i can see is your eyes as they watch me all i can do is close my eyes and hope the landing wonât hurt as much as they sayâ

Where Should I Be at 23?
It has come to my attention lately that many people I know, including myself are a bit lost. We have made it to adulthood, they gave us a diploma and pointed us toward the sun. We have everything we used to crave as teenagers. Being out on our own, having our own life, able to make our own decisions. Yet isnât it strange, almost to the point of laughter, that it is nothing like what we could have imagined. In two days I will be four months away from my twenty third birthday. With time as a twenty two year old dwindling, I ask myself a very important question. Where should I be at age twenty three? I could run down the generic checklist, and quite frankly pass with flying colors. For all intensive purposes, against all basic standards, I am a successful twenty two year old woman. Than why is it, that I feel so lost? So incomplete? I feel as if every move that I make is not nearly good enough. As if there is something more I should be doing, something more that I should be achieving. Iâm not sure if other people my age feel the same way. After all I have always been a bit of an overachiever, full of an almost unhealthy amount of drive, an unrealistic sense of perfection. I hope I am not alone. I hear the stories of my friends, they also seem to be a bit lost. But are they happy? Do they enjoy the endless wandering? I know that I donât. I have always been a clean course personality, the arrow of my internal compass has always been pointing steadily in a constant direction, it does not spin or waiver. But now, I donât know. Twenty two has done some damage. I think my compass is broken, I feel as if I am walking in circles. One thing is for certain, I need to find my direction before I turn twenty three. Where should I be in four months? Where should I be at twenty three? Hopefully, in the right direction.Â
ËHe couldnât understand how he had failed to see them before. Old age, he thought; he would soon be twenty-three.Ë
