For the Love of a Painting || kaitouxjeanne
Yes, Hakuba had seen her leave, and yes, he had burned. With anger, with jealousy, with something else entirely and he forced a hateful smile as he saw that man lead her from the stage. Play your game, Miss d’Arc… Nothing would give me more pleasure than to see the entirety of your performance.
He lied to himself, of course. Yes, he wanted to see what she could do; despite his interest in homicide, it seemed that he always collected the most interesting of thieves to deal with. She was certainly one of them, easily in the top three…
The detective forced himself to relax his posture, hands unclenching from his sides as he went about his work, investigating everyone else on the floor. Soon, soon…
And a little while later, it was time. The sound of glass with a thundering crescendo - the call of the woman’s voice. Hakuba tensed, muscles coiled, and sprang from the champagne server with fierce focus, weaving through the crowd to get to that painting - the object he was sworn to protect.
Well, let's get to it.
.. Was what she thought, before something shot into the ground in front of her before the phantom thief could even take a step further. Jeanne tried to take a look at the object, but was forced to dodge as another came whizzing at her. Wait. Whizzing at her? A flash of color registered in her mind as she moved out of its way.
It looks like a dart. No.. it's a bolt! A crossbow bolt!
"Demon! Show yourself!"
A poisonous laugh and a figure in the shadows of the room made themselves apparent. The owner, now sporting a malicious expression à la demon, held a hunting crossbow. Currently aimed at her.
"Well, well, well. You finally made it, God's Warrior. I was getting a little tired of waiting, you know."
Before Jeanne could spit out a reply, another bolt came her way, fast. Dodging it with ease, she turned again to speak to the demon when something else came at her. And another. And another. However, these bolts weren't from the crossbow, they were of demonic variety.
From behind? Oh.. crap.
Although the thief was alone with the demon, she was surrounded. The demon had created some sort of energy field that could apparently shoot out bolts of demonic energy. This had to be a pretty strong demon to have this sort of ability. And thanks to this unfortunately talented demon, she was actually further from the target portrait than when she started. Each inch to the painting was going to take some doing.
Faaaantastic.
Again, that horrible laugh came, oozing triumph along with malice. "I'm pretty well known amongst the demons for hunting, you know. Imagine how happy I was that this human I possessed also likes to hunt. Humans, hunting. Ha! Priceless! But oh so many fun toys.." The possessed owner patted the crossbow fondly, without taking its eyes off of her. "I understand you're supposed to be hunting us demons down.. but it seems like I'm doing the hunting here, don't you think? Actually, think fast!"
All at once, a crossbow bolt and 3 bolts of demonic energy came straight for her from multiple directions.
Suddenly very glad for her regular training, Jeanne expertly dodged the first energy bolt by quickly swerving her body in an arch, then moving to the right to let the crossbow bolt miss, with a spin to the left had the second bolt whizzing past, and finally, a backwards bend took care of the last.
Ha! And I am.. 2 feet closer to the painting. Just a little more.. I only have one shot or else I'm going to get shot by something! Please Hakuba, I like your face a lot, but just hold off until this is done?
Just then, the door opened.
Oh, hell.
