oliver comforting reader after they got cheated on เญจเง
โฌ - letter home [childish gambino]
the rain had been pouring for hours. you could still hear it against the windows. steady. relentless, almost mocking.
you sat curled up in the corner of oliver's couch, knees pulled to your chest beneath one of his blankets.
it smelled like him. that stupid cologne he always wore, normally, it would've made you smile,ย
right now, it just made your chest hurt.
your mug sat forgotten between your hands, the tea inside slowly cooling as you stared down at it.
you couldn't stop thinking about it. walking into his apartment, seeing her, seeing him, the way he'd looked at you afterward. guilty, caught, pathetic.
you squeezed your eyes shut. god, you felt sick.
the sound of footsteps pulled you from your thoughts, oliver appeared a second later, carrying a small plate of snacks.
he took one look at your face and immediately frowned. not the teasing kind, not the dramatic kind, the real one. the one he only wore when something was genuinely wrong.
quietly, he set the plate down before dropping onto the couch beside you. close, but not too close. giving you space if you wanted it, giving you comfort if you didn't.
"you haven't touched your tea."
you shrugged, he sighed softly. for a moment, neither of you said anything. just the rain, just the silence, just oliver sitting beside you.
"was i not enough?" the words slipped out before you could stop them, barely above a whisper.
but he heard them, of course he did. oliver went completely still. you hated how your voice cracked, hated how weak you sounded, hated that part of you actually believed it.
because if you were enough, then why had he cheated? why had he looked somewhere else? why hadn't he stayed?
a fresh tear slid down your cheek, you quickly wiped it away. oliver reached over before you could, his hand wrapped gently around yours. warm, steady, safe.
you looked up, and immediately wished you hadn't.
because there wasn't an ounce of pity in his eyes. only concern, only care.
"don't do that to yourself."
your lip trembled. "but-"
"no." his voice wasn't harsh, just firm, the kind of firm that made you listen.
"what happened tonight isn't because you weren't enough."
another tear slipped free, oliver's thumb brushed across your knuckles, slowly, carefully.
"it's because he's an idiot."
a watery laugh escaped you.
oliver smiled slightly. "seriously." he shook his head. "you could've given that guy everything." his jaw tightened. "and he still would've found a way to screw it up."
you looked down, unable to meet his eyes.
because hearing someone defend you after spending hours blaming yourself felt almost unbearable.
"you're not hard to love." his voice softened, softer than before.
"he was just too stupid to appreciate it."
that was it, that was the thing that broke you, the thing that shattered whatever composure you had left.
a sob escaped your throat, then another, and suddenly you couldn't stop.
oliver immediately took the mug from your hands before it spilled, setting it safely on the table.
then opening his arms just slightly. an invitation, nothing more.
you didn't hesitate. the second you leaned into him, his arms wrapped around you. strong and secure. like he was holding something precious.
one hand settled against your back, the other moved into your hair, slowly running through it. again, and again, and again.
"i've got you." his voice rumbled softly above your head. "just cry."
his grip tightened, not enough to hurt, just enough to remind you he was there.
and for the first time all night, you believed it.
the rain continued outside, your tears soaked through his shirt, and oliver never complained once. he just held you, patiently, letting you fall apart.
so he could help put you back together again.
