The musical starts out with Neb staring into an old picture of Kain, smiling and laughing. “What happened to her?“ He asked his father, Jay. “Well son...“ Jay starts out then breaks out into song about how Kain was the light of his life and how it dimmed after she died in a skateboarding accident.

Neb then decides that something isn’t right and decides to look more into this case and goes to the librarian, Willow, for documents about the death. Then it cuts to Neb desperately looking for clues and hints on what could’ve happened to his mother, and breaks out into a fast paced song that symbolizes the panic and desperation of wanting to find out what happened.

Then while he’s looking for clues and investigating, Neb’s then partner, Cass, gets angry and annoyed because Neb is pulling away and this turns into an angry past paced song that goes back and forth until the eventual break up. After that Neb goes back to the drawing board to try and find ANYTHING but ends up doing nothing but going into circles.

He then breaks into a slow, sad song about how he just wants to find out what happened and near the end of the song he spots a clue and the song ends on ’-wait.’

Then it cuts to Ruby in her home, monologing about the ’accident’. “Oh it was such a SAD accident, she was such a sweet person.“ But the whole thing feels off, like she doesn’t mean any word she’s saying.

It then cuts to Neb ringing the door nervously of the house of his mother’s old best friend, Danny Motta. When Danny finally answers the door and lets Neb inside and sits him down to talk, Neb starts telling Danny about the investigation Neb is running and that he hasn’t been able to find a single useful clue, Danny starts telling all the things he found suspicious about the death and together they duet into this song with clues and mysteries they uncover together.

Then it cuts to Jay at Kain’s grave, slow tears falling from his eyes as he softly sings about the things happening and how he wishes she could have been here to see it.

Then it cuts to Cass again as they contemplate the thing they said to Neb and wonders if he had a point, slowly coming to the realization that they were in the wrong, but not being able to get into contact with Neb cause Neb is too busy with trying to find out about his mother, Cass sings about the regrets and how they wished they could’ve ended on a better note.

It then cuts to Ruby again, in the past when Kain was alive watching Jay and Kain walk away together, and starts singing about jealousy and hatred and how she plans kill Kain because Jay started hanging out less and paying less attention to her and then cuts to the present where Ruby is smiling while looking at the grave of Kain. (also dont see this as romantic please as the people in real life are 18 and 14 respectively)

Then when Neb and Danny finally figure it out using all the clues they found and report their findings to the police, it cuts to the court where a song plays out, Ruby desperately tries to defend herself while Neb, Danny and their lawyer, Sil are using the evidence they found and win the court case and get Ruby guilty of all charges, the song ending with Ruby looking into the crowd and seeing Jay looking at her, as they make eye contact the song ends with Jay turning away disappointed and sad and Ruby, still looking at Jay with shock and sadness getting led away by police officers.

When Neb finally sees all the texts Cass sent him he goes to the park where they always used to meet up and there they duet a song about how sorry they both were and how they could’ve made better choices, and ending the song with Cass and Neb making up and becoming friends again. (not dating bc they dont want to go back into a relationship again)

And then the finalle song plays with Neb and Jay going to Kain’s grave and dueting a sad but happy song about how they finally avenged her death and how much they miss her, with Kain’s ghost sitting beside them singing along but not to be heard. When the song ends it pans out to Neb and Jay hugging with Kain’s ghost hugging them both before finally fading away.
