In his youth, Kai's father Simon was a mariner, and often went far out to sea on the boat he shared with his friend Willy.
Simon would often go out alone, and one day came back carrying a baby with pointed ears and silver-scaled patches of skin. Only Willy knew the truth: Kai was half-merperson, rejected by his mother's people because he couldn't survive underwater for long. Desperate to keep him safe and well, Kai's mother requested Simon raise him as a human boy on the land.
