The streets were almost silent by the time I met Suna. Suna claimed that hours like 3 am were the best to go skateboarding at. It was that he probably liked the atmosphere of skating at night.
I didn’t know much about skateboarding, honestly. I’d only agreed because he’d texted me out of nowhere asking if I wanted to learn. Plus, he had bought me a skateboard for my birthday anyway.
And to me spending time with Suna didn’t seem like a bad idea at all.
By the time I met him at the skatepark, he was already there waiting for me, looking through his phone and slouched like he always was.
He looked up at me lazily, as if sensing my presence.
“Hey, about time. I was thinking you bailed.” Suna said getting up slowly and also grabbing his skateboard up from the floor.
“You told me to come out and go skating randomly at 3 am, Rin. So I had to somehow sneak out.” I spoke chuckling lightly, putting my own skateboard to the floor. The one he had bought for me as a present.
He shrugged, “Do you wanna learn or what?”
Then he nudged his skateboard toward me with the toe of his shoe.
I bit the inside of my cheek before nodding. “Yeah… just don’t make me fall.”
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. “I got you.”
After a moment of silence, he looked at me again and said, “…You do know how to stand on it, right?”
I rolled my eyes, scoffing. “Yeah. It’s literally the easiest-“
And the second I stepped foot onto the skateboard, it shot forward.
Instinctively, I held onto Suna’s shoulders, to keep myself balanced.
His smirk widened, “That was easy?”
He stepped the skateboard with the toe of his shoe before it could get away.
“Yeah maybe not so much after all.” I mumbled, avoiding his gaze.
He stepped behind me, hands resting slightly against my waist while he steadied the skateboard with his foot.
“Just focus on your balance. I’ll let go in a second.” He said
The moment his hands left my waist, the warmth of them disappeared with surprising fast speed. I had to hold onto a nearby streetlight’s pole to keep up my balance.
He let out an amused chuckle, “You have to let go of the pole though.”
And then I reluctantly loosened my grip. I wasn’t scared, I just didn’t want my hangout with Suna ending up with me eating the pavement.
I was able to stay balanced perfectly without slipping.
“See, I told you.” Suna said.
“Yep, it’s pretty easy.” I chuckled.
He let out an amused chuckle, “You almost fell. And had to hold onto that streetlight.”
But then quickly added, “But c’mon, try moving.”
“Moving?” I looked at him.
“Yeah, you don’t just stand on it.” Suna stepped closer.
I rolled my eyes before placing one foot on the board and pushing off.
The board shot forward much faster than I had expected.
“Rin?! How do I stop this?” I called over my shoulder, the wind catching my voice.
Suna sighed. “Don’t jump.”
He broke into a jog, surprisingly quick despite looking completely unbothered. “Just keep your balance.”
Before I could stress more, I felt a tug at the back of my hoodie. My speed slowed until the board rolled to a stop.
Suna let go, one hand resting on the skateboard to keep it from rolling away.
“You have to relax a bit.” He said.
“I’m perfectly relaxed.” I shot back.
I sighed as he chuckled. “Come on.”
He stepped onto his own board. “Just follow me. You know the basics.”
I pushed off more carefully this time, matching Suna’s speed. The only sound between us was the quiet rumble of our wheels against the pavement. The city felt strangely peaceful at this hour. Storefronts were dark, traffic lights changed for cars that weren’t there, and the summer air was cool enough to make me forget that it was this late. He got faster so
I was left a bit behind him. He was glancing behind, looking carefully to see if I’m following from behind, confirming that I wasn’t eating the pavement. (At least not yet. ) Though it was hard trying to change directions, we weren’t going too fast and going from a straight route so I had nothing to worry about.
In fact, I probably didn’t have a worry in my mind. I was at ease. I couldn’t remember the last time it was this quite outside.
“Told you I could do it.”
Suna looked over. “…Not bad.”
“But try to keep up with me, yeah?”
“It’s hard to change directions.” I spoke.
Then he look ahead again. “try keeping up.”
I frowned, “Easy for you to say.”
He slowed down just enough for me to catch up before carving gently to the left. “Lean with it.” He said. “Don’t fight with the board.”
I copied his movement. For a second, I thought I was going to fall. Instead the board turned with me.
My expression turned into a grin and he saw it, smiling softly and not too visibly but visibly enough that I noticed it.
We begun skating through quiet neighborhoods, passing closed cafés and restaurants. Every now and then Suna would glance back to make sure I hadn’t fallen behind.
He turned around, “Yeah?”
I got off my skateboard, stopping slowly.
“I don’t want to go too far from my home or the skatepark. It’s really late.”
He hummed in agreement, “Alright. If you say so.”
“Or are you just tired? Already?” He added immediately.
He got off his skateboard too, grabbing it, now carrying it with his hand.
I shook my head, “No, I just feel like going too far can be a problem.”
“Okay then. You’re more cautious than I thought,” he said.
“Someone has to be.” I replied.
I looked at him. “You invited me out at three in the morning.”
“Well… I wanted to spend more time with you.” I murmured.
He looked at me. “Really?”
“Well, why else would I agree to this?” I said looking back at him.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, “Fair.”
After a moment of silence passed as we started walking together, He spoke up, hesitating. “I wouldn’t have asked anybody else.”
“What does that mean?” I asked.
He was quiet for a moment. The only sound being our footsteps. “I thought you’d say yes if I made it about skateboarding.”
He shrugged. “Guess I was right.”
I smiled before looking at him, “You know..”
“You could have just asked to hangout.”
He huffed out a quiet laugh. “…Yeah.”
We started walking again, our skateboards rolling quietly beside us. Maybe Suna had been right.Maybe three in the morning really was the best time to learn how to skateboard or…
I just liked spending those hours with him.
