Ok yes this scene with Harry and Vernon breaks my heart. Because Harry is SO forgiving and yet here he wonders if this is where his limit lies. I’ve thought about this scene a lot, and I think that if this were to happen — if Vernon were held hostage and Harry were faced with the choice of trying to save him, or letting him suffer and die — Harry would ultimately go and rescue him. BUT I think he would hesitate. I think instead of leaping right into a rescue without a second thought (what we see Harry do many times throughout the series), this time he would have an inner battle with himself. And honestly, as horrible as it is, I think it would be the things drilled into him as a child that would convince him to go — that Vernon and Petunia put a roof over his head and clothed him and fed him (however grudgingly and minimally) when they didn’t have to. He would start to feel ungrateful and guilty, and minimize his own suffering, to the point of convincing himself to go.
