He flew balloons like they were dreams
Floating so high
🎈 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈
Until one by one, they
Popped
Popped
Popped
Like microwave popcorn
In a midnight sky.
Travel plans /_ a place is the name you give it
South first. Then east.
Back to the place I erased from
my map. The people who were
shards of glass. I kept holding/
gripping tighter and tighter.
There was an empty swimming pool
and a shillouette swingset that could not
catch a breeze.
And those things will always be empty
to me. The whole state is empty. The parking lots,
the pizza shops
and the eyes. Empty.
When I return, I will pour
a new name into
my mouth. Fill my belly with
the county lines. They never
actually meant anything
at all.
Dark(ish) Suburbs
It never gets dark enough to see the stars, a patina of orange light, a shimmer of wet pavement. It never gets dark enough to hear your own pulse, running through streets named for trees. Boredom is a monster. They say it’s better, five floor plans to choose from, shutters blue or green, and a neighborhood watch. Mowed grass and quiet evenings. I longed for Orion, for the crickets, and capture-the-flag. I mourned the pastel metals and oniongrass and fireworks bursting like babyfist roses in summer and at New Year’s. The suburbs were never as dark as the trailer park. Nor were they ever as bright. – S. E. De Haven

Charles bakwaski ki ye poem yaad agayi:
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I’m not going
to let anybody see
you.
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he’s
in there.
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?
there’s a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I’m too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody’s asleep.
I say, I know that you’re there,
so don’t be
sad.
then I put him back,
but he’s singing a little
in there, I haven’t quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it’s nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don’t
weep, do you?

Katherine Mansfield, from a diary entry featured in “The Diaries of Katherine Mansfield,”
your rhinestone eyes are like factories far away.
“…I cannot write to you the calm, cold language of a world which I loathe–of a world which is not mine. You have to know–indeed, you have to know, that it is I who am responsible. It is I: I did violence to my own heart; I did violence to the true valuptuousness of my life. My heart is very broken.”
— Edgar Allan Poe, from a letter to Helen Whitman featured in The last letters of Edgar Allan Poe to Sarah Helen Whitman
“I have been bent and broken, but - I hope - into a better shape.” - Charles Dickens, Great Expectations
Once a story leaves the hand of its author, it belongs to the reader. And the reader may see any number of things, conflicting things, contradictory things. The author goes silent. If what he intended matter so very much, there would be no need for inquisitions, schisms and wars. But he is silent, silent. The author of the poem is silent, the author of the world is silent. We are left with no intentions but our own.”
G.W. Wilson
