I have been receiving reports and evidence of First Nations people being racially targeted, assaulted, and detained by the federal agency Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE). We want to remind our members to be safe and proactive by carrying with you at a minimum your tribal identification cards or a copy of your degree of Indian Blood. Our tribal identification affirms our citizenship and political status.
Our Nation is a sovereign government and our members are not immigrants. We are not subject to immigrant enforcement on our own lands. Any federal activity within our boundaries must recognize and respect our tribal sovereignty, treaty obligations, and established jurisdictional boundaries. Any ICE presence or activity within our lands is not authorized, not welcome, and will be addressed. Unauthorized personnel will be escorted off our lands.
If you are profiled, harassed, or detained, please notify us immediately (701) 854-8529. My staff is working on a "Know Your Rights" information phone line that will be released in the incoming days. Please watch our social media page for further communication.

This is your reminder that if you are feeling helpless and cannot be on the front lines, there are other ways to help.
People need to be fed. Check to see what your local food pantry situation is. Make hot meals for people you know have been out in the cold for hours on end. Emergency kits for field medics need to be supplied. People need help getting to the pharmacy, the grocery store. Help shovel your neighborâs sidewalk if youâre able. Find a way to do something.
Build connections. Build community. They want us frightened and isolated. Refuse.

No one is doing well right now, but being a little critter right now has got to be terrifying. This is such a crushing series of images, especially considering PBSâs funding got slashed. While Iâm happy Sesame Street continues to keep the wellbeing and education of children as a major priority, thereâs a certain amount of innocence that Sesame Street represents and this is giving me such a visceral feeling rn
sesame street has been meeting kids where they were at since the 70s, and in the 70s, POC kids were in some pretty scary places. what contemporary white parents might perceive as a sudden dystopian horror is, sadly, the level of trauma, violence, insecurity, and fear that a lot of non-white families have had to navigate for generations. it has always been hard and heartbreaking for some families to try to protect their kids from knowing how dangerous the world is and how much some parts of it want them dead. now it's white parents time to join in that important work.
i don't meant to scold, but i want to remind: generations of kids have taken much-needed messages of comfort and solace from sesame street, and the people there have always known, since the start, how much we need bravery and compassion. it's not about innocence and it's not about ignorance: it's about love. this is their entire mission, and they're staying strong. we can too.

Connect with your local school's admin office and/or their PTA. It's ok to reach out even if you don't have kids at the school. PTAs are organizing mutual aid for school families, safe rides, school observers.
Find an official protest or other event via Indivisible, 50501, FREE AMERICA, or MIRAC. Students at many high schools are staging walk-outs; if your local school is doing this, reach out to school leadership or the PTA and ask how you can support as a community member.
Join the effort to stop Hilton from housing ICEÂ by booking hotel rooms and then cancelling at the last minute. This action can be done from home! The effort is being organized by Sunrise Movement, who are telling activists to target specific hotels one-by-one. More info:Â SHUT DOWN HILTON
Find people in your area who are actively monitoring ICEÂ and/or stationing themselves in high-traffic areas and ask how you can help. Check for local FB events where people are organizing and just show up.
At minimum, read the COPAL Handbook before you go out to observe. The DFL, Monarca, and other orgs have been hosting online trainings for constitutional observers (though these fill up quickly).
When you see ICE in action, start recording. Be as loud and as disruptive as possible: honk your horn, set off your car alarm, blow your whistle. Let people know that ICE is in the area. If you see someone being detained, try to get their name and a phone number to call their emergency contact.
If you do not feel comfortable observing ICE in person, there are ways you can support from home. Just ask the people who are organizing in your area. I have social anxiety, and I had never participated in any kind of political action before this past Saturday. If I can do it, you can!
Local organizers are requesting that people who help monitor ICE DO NOT participate in 1-to-1 mutual aid efforts, as these can put the families you are helping at risk.
If you have friends/acquaintances who are sympathetic but not politically active, reach out to them. Show them that they're not alone in feeling helpless. Pick a few low-commitment actions from this list and do them together.
call your representatives to urge them to vote against further funding for ice. this is a very easy process through 5calls and it takes 2-3 minutes. you are almost guaranteed to leave a voicemail so please donât feel nervous or stressed about it, this is something that could make a difference. all you need to do is put in your zip code and the site will provide a script and the numbers for your representatives.
