Martin Odegaard: our leading man. Our ingenue. Signed for Real Madrid at the age of 15 and flopped completely. Trained with the first team and played with Castilla (the youth team), ensuring he fit in with neither. Sent out on loan after loan to get experience but never got the opportunity to use that experience with his home club. Went on loan to Arsenal in 2021 and fit in with the side wonderfully. Signed for Arsenal permanently at the start of the 2021-2022 season, a time when the club were still rebuilding from the slow slide of the final Wenger years and the embarrassing dumpster fire of the Unai Emery years. Given the captain's armband in July 2022 after the Granit Xhaka debacle and the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. He was 23 years old.
Declan Rice: our narrative foil. Hundred million man. Released from Chelsea's academy when he was 14. Joined West Ham's academy and became an indispensible member of the club. Captained West Ham since 2019, when he was 20 years old. Won the Europa Conference League with the club in 2022-2023, their first European trophy since 1965. Left for Arsenal immediately afterwards.
Arsenal FC. Bottle jobs. Specialists in failure (Jose Mourinho's saved so many of his best bon mots for Arsene). Known for developing young talent, playing the beautiful game, and never winning anything. Have not won the Premier League since the invincible season of 2003-2004. I love them more than life, but you can see how this weighs on players and staff and fans alike. Second place in the league in 2023-2024. Second place in the league in 2024-2025. Finally got the job done this year, but dear lord.
Martin was captain for all of that, and was a brilliant player in 2023-2024. Less so in 2024-2025, while Declan, who hadn't had any problems settling into the club, was bringing his best game, probably best evidenced by his two freekicks against Real Madrid at the Emirates. He was also bringing full star power: floppy-haired down-to-earth charm, banter, dressing-room charisma.
Enter 2025-2026. Our year this year, for the third year in a row. Our captain? Injured for like half the season, quiet a lot of the time when he does come on. (He also provided crucial assists when we needed them, but that's not part of this story.) Declan, on the other hand, was playing full matches week in and week out. Mr. Consistent. Box to box, ball-winner, tackler, chance-maker, set play-taker. Creative and hardworking. Vocal. Popular.
The football talking heads show up, as they do, to say: Arsenal need a new captain. They won't win anything with Odegaard as captain. He hasn't got the mentality. Give the armband to Rice. The most egregious of these was former Mr. Arsenal himself, Tony Adams. Somewhere in that brouhaha some interviewer asked Declan if he'd want to be Arsenal captain, and he said, more or less, sure, he'd take on the responsibility if anything happened to Martin.
And this is where we are now. One Premier League trophy. One captain whose role in getting that Premier League trophy was questioned and questionable, who never fully managed to shake the failed-wonderkid label. One man out for recognition of his leadership skills on top of his footballing acumen. One World Cup quarterfinal match.
