My work explores the ideas of protection, isolation, and healing. I created a sculpture that resembles a corner—because corners are where I personally feel the safest, the most protected. The structure is made from tubes arranged so that they don’t fully enclose me. As much as I sometimes want to hide or isolate myself, I also step out of my comfort zone. I am still seen.

This piece connects to my previous project about migration. Moving to a new place made me feel vulnerable and exposed. There are times when I don’t want to be seen at all—but at the same time, I am studying Fine Art, a path that asks me to be seen, to take up space.

The tubes in my sculpture are bound with strips of calico and PVA, resembling bandages, to reflect the healing process. Some tubes extend outward like spikes, adding a sense of defense or protection.

I say “finish” because if I had more time I would like to make it more dense with tubes around me so I become more part of the sculpture, like it’s consuming me

One of the things I enjoyed the most about this project was taking the advices and the ideas of other people, there is a lot collaboration in my piece I really liked that

I was feeling kind of trapped in my triangle shape, sarah mentioned the work of Antony Caro “Prairie” and it inspired me to extend my piece in different ways which added perspective and fluidity to the piece

Mike recommended me to do this cuts on the tubes so they would fit and add more strength

I created a triangular shapes because it feel like is just a big corner and that in my mind is a safe place and my idea to add the body to it is to place myself in it

And also to bound the tubes instead of using glue I use strips of calico soaked in water and PVA glue wrapped around the intersections, the PVA had a similar effect to my previous project of my frantic mountain range where I use cornstarch to stiffen the fabric

Taking inspiration from my playing around with the tubes I made this

We were taking the sun and after I saw my friend resting so peacefully around her and mine things I decided to place the tubes in a way that they will cover her and “protect” her

Then I tried putting and holding the tubes around me, it gave me the feeling that that’s how a hedgehog feels protected with their spines

I’ll be working with cardboard tubes that Sarah has facilitated me, I been stuck for about not really knowing where to start so I took this pictures to get the my creativity going

I like the idea of working on corner or making something that resembles one since is the place I feel most protected and safe

This is kinda of what I want to do with the tubes but Im still figuring out how to work with the tubes and I’m thinking ones I have them assembled I’ll cover it in either papier mâché or plaster

Mike showed me some artists that help be think more outside the box and help me realise that I can make a sculpture and then see how to fix the body to it instead of making something thinking on how it will fix to the body first

I want to explore protection, isolation and healing in my piece

This project explores migration as both a journey and a transformation. Through print, sculpture, and design, I capture the fluidity of movement - not just the physical act of leaving, but the emotional shifts that come with it. Inspired by my own experience of moving from Chile to Ireland, I blend different techniques to reflect on identity, adaptation, and the traces we leave behind. This Movement is not just about distance - it’s about change, memory, and belonging

Conclusion of this project

I started this course very sure that I wanted to do Graphic design, I thought I was going to like the course, the jobs I could get, etc….

I didn’t do any of the graphic design workshops the first semester because I thought better to use the time doing the other disciplines I liked before doing GD, But this semester after my 2nd week of doing the sculpture workshop I realised that I didn’t actually wanted to do GD that I actually wanted to do the Sculpture and Combine Media degree - I was really stressed about making that decision but after talking to the lectures and students from both disciplines I realised that I had to what I loved and enjoy doing, instead of just picking a discipline because I thought it would make me more “employable”

I have really enjoyed this course and the possibilities I have been given to experiment with different material and processes, and I’m very excited to start the new project

The Lecture Sarah OFlaherty told me to look at this work of Kathy Prendergast - she is an Irish artist known for reworking maps and exploring themes of identity, memory, and place. Which is similar to what I’m doing for my project Her City Drawings series removes details from maps, turning cities into abstract patterns. Her work often reflects on power, history, and belonging

We did typography on Monday and we were asked to pick words that related to our project and make them expressive

On Tuesday I experimented with the Light Box using some paper that Sylvia gave me to make paper mountains

I also scanned the paper Mountains and created a “M” with them and then finish the word righting “OUNTAIN” at the side

After the break we went to the Mac Room and use photoshop to edit pictures of the works we have done and to experiment with the different tools that photoshop offers

On Thursday we use Illustrator to greate a Poster

I use this picture to make the poster

I used photoshop to erase the background and only left the mountains, I copy and pasted many of them to make it look like the view I have of “the Andes Mountain Range” when I’m on the plane to come to Ireland

This is the poster I made with that, I chose the word “LEAV E” in that way because is like the “E” is leaving and that what I feel like the mountains say to me when I flight over them
