Inspiration

On our first day of ceramics, we were shown a range of ceramic mugs. Orla Culligans designs stood out to me the most, the mug is very minimalistic and sleek. The colour combination stood out to me the most.  The only problem I found with this mug is that it had no handle... As I am a clumsy person I knew the mug and I would run into some problems...Meaning I’d probably drop the mug while making a cuppa.

For my ceramics project I’ve decided to pick Tailoring/Alterations. I also would like to explore and try and combine textiles with ceramics. I’ve an interest in textiles. Specifically knit, embroidery, crotchet and would like to intertwine this into my work.

Attempted to grow crystals on my goat skull. I think my borax water solution wasent concentrated enough and that’s why my crystals didn’t grow to a big size.

This piece started off as thread of a painted canvas. I noticed the back of the canvas was more interesting I decided to turn the canvas skin over.

To make the thread drawing stand out I painted around it.

I made this head piece inspired by Kat Von D’a wedding headpiece. I made it out of masking tape chicken wire and red electrical tape, then draped the red lace of it and altering it.

I also made matching gloves inspired by majesty black. I embroidered red horns onto each glove.

Did a workshop in the dark room, really enjoyed the process.

While researching Stone Age bone necklaces, Gillian Genser a sculptor from Toronto.

Genser would grind and sand down eggshells,blue mussel shells and other shells and use them as a medium for her sculptures.. She used this process since 1991 only working with natural materials. While working on the sculpture of “Adam” Genser fell sick. After seeing multiple specialists Genser was diagnosed with heavy-metal poisoning.Doctors found high levels of arsenic and lead in her body. Genser lost her hearing, and suffers from many health problems.

She feels like a suffering creature trapped in a polluted habitat. Genser hopes that through her art that she will create a sense of connectivity and reverence for the natural world. “Adam” was completed in 2015.
