PROJECT STATEMENT-
I decided to choose for my two worlds- Jane Fonda and the 80’s. I look up to Fonda as she is an amazing actress that inspired women throughout her whole career as she accomplished many brilliant things. And now at the age of 82 she is still inspiring people all over the world as she stands up for climate change, the true activist she is. She doesn’t care about what people think of her or in fact breaking the law as she has been arrested for activism. She’s fearless. I decided on the time period the 80’s as I admire the fashion trends that occurred during this decade. I love colour and big shoulders. I knew a lot of fashion icons from this period also that I already loved. The connection between the two is Fonda made very famous workout videos during the 80’s and set her own fashion trend with her workout gear. The leotard, leggings and leg warnings - an unusual fashion trend that was loved in the 80’s.
The key elements that I took from these worlds were Fonda’s costumes in Barbarella, the shapes from her striking workout poses, colour and icons that I admire from the 80’s. I traced over all the lines I could find from her costumes and poses to create shapes. I printed these tracings making them big and small to see how they would fit on the body. I looked at 80’s patterns and created my own that I could use. Colour is one of the factors I love the most about fashion so I made sure I knew what were the popular colours of the 80’s.
In the final 6 looks I combined the two worlds together to create a unique and striking line up. I wanted to create 6 looks that are colourful, funky and stand out.
