So my “band” produced a new album. I’m super happy about it! Our name is Manticess; we play pop music in a slightly old-fashioned sense. The songs are based on melodies. The lyrics deal with feelings, situations, hope, sadness, guitars, summer, flying, love, parting, reunions etc.

This song developed over a couple of days, which I thankfully had at my hands. The chorus came first. Then what? It made me think of Shania Twain’s marijuana experience, which she described in her autobiography: “I mean, it did make me dizzy and giddy, but at that age, so did having a good laugh over an unexpected, loud fart.” (p. 94)

This is an exploration of the YouTube statistics of videos by the Vlogbrothers (Hank and John Green), covering Views, Likes per View, Likes per Dislike, Comments per View, and Outliers.

Diese Aufnahme hat ein anderes Ende als das Video. Geschrieben habe ich das Stück so auf der Gitarre. Den Orgelklängen wollte ich jedoch lieber ein freundliches Ende bereiten.

Milk is the 8th of 52 52-second songs I set out to produce in 2015.

This is a perfect example for songs produced under pressure. I wrote the song last weekend. It’s a little bit absurd. The recording became much more absurd because my external sound card stopped working. I just recorded the vocals in a hotel room in Hamburg, whispering into my laptop’s hyper-sensitive built-in microphone. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to improve the vocals over the next few days, so I just put this tune out there.

This is me experimenting with my new travel MIDI keyboard. It’s a filler if you ask me. Not an unpleasant one, mind you. It might provide a short, quiet intermission. I don’t know. The title was attached as an afterthought given the character of the harmony and the science fiction books I recently read. Looks like there won't be a video for this one, sorry.

This instrumental had the working title “Week #4″. Very creative, I know. Even after recording (and filming) the tune it lacked a title. So I forced “A Walk in the Wilderness” upon it. Go figure.

#4 A Walk in the Wilderness

Eigentlich wollte ich das Lied so simpel aufnehmen, wie ich es im Video spiele. Aber am Ende habe ich dann doch E-Gitarren (gedoppelt), Akustik-Gitarren (gedoppelt), Bass, Rassel und drei Gesangsspuren aufgenommen – immerhin ohne Klick.

This is a jolly punk rock song, nothing more, nothing less. The video contains further trivia (no black skirts, though – sorry).

Here we go again. It's 2015 and I'm bringing back my 52-second songs! This one might grow into a proper Manticess song someday. The nightingale is, of course, a great singer who died. I did have one specific in mind while writing the chorus, but it's probably better you think of whoever comes to your mind. In other news, I'm attempting to make a video for each song.
