“to play someone who’s a real person, who’s living today, who will watch this movie—there is a great responsibility to that. so what i decided to do was pull his articles from when he was working in the paper the year that this takes place, because i wanted to understand his interests and the things he wrote about. it’s important to me to make it as real as possible. so i took one of his articles that he wrote, i printed it out, and i transcribed it onto a notepad, then i stuck that notepad on my desk. and there’s a scene where i’m typing an article, and instead of just typing nonsense, i’m typing an article that he really wrote that week. and that, to me, it just makes it all the more real.”
