“none of this would have happened if we would have just stayed on our own!”

“can you stay with me?”

“this isn’t going to be easy.. are you sure there’s no other way to go about this?”

“can’t sleep?”

“it scares me how little i feel when my loved ones die. it’s happened so much. i’ve.. just gotten used to it.”

“i know this isn’t exactly the time for romance but i like you.. a lot.”

“are you okay?”

he had grown lighter in the years that passed,       almost reminiscent of his former self:     the mage in kirkwall’s darktown,     healing the sick,    the poor.    who smiled and seemed to be happy.       but it was an almost feeling.       anders had lived the pass three years a fugitive,     wanted and hated by many in thedas.

the man who lit the match and ignited the blaze,     fanning the flames at every turn.      he didn’t regret it.       he had lived the lives of every mage trapped in the circle.       it was an inevitable thing.       he recognized the horror of it,     of course.      but his peaceful options had been blown off as the ravings of madmen for years prior.       there was no other choice.      

he sat comfortably under a tree,      tucked in the corner of skyhold betwixt the barn and the kitchens,       a white kitten in his lap,      snoozing peacefully.      but the sound of hooves would frighten the poor thing,      and off running they went.       the mage sighed slightly,      head turning to see who was arriving and to his own horror,      kirkwall’s champion,     the inquisitor and her entourage heading his way.       he had managed to keep himself hidden from her knowledge as best he could,      simply because there was far more important things to do than bring up the past.       better for her to think he was still gone,     maybe dead.       maybe imprisoned for his crimes,      than know he was alive and in the halls of skyhold.

avoidance would only get him so far.        he knew he was hated,      by her,    specifically.       but this was a moment that he couldn’t simply disappear into the shadows from,       not when hawke had already noticed him sitting there.      his eyes darted elsewhere,       hands running over the legs of his pants to try and brush off the various white hairs that the cat had left behind                            futile of course.     

honestly?     putting cassandra on the sunburst throne.      anders shows up in skyhold only because the inquisitor sided with the mages and made them their alliance,     so putting someone on the sunburst throne who he knows is in some regard against mage freedom is incredibly off-putting to him,      and it feels like a slap in the face after siding with them and allying with them.
