I think it depends on which area and province you’re speaking of, I think each landscape has their own elements that could fall under the “gothic” category. In my work, it’s mostly based in my home province of Manitoba, which is a plains and prairies province. So in my terms, I associate Canadian Gothic with extreme isolation of the prairies, the harsh climate and environment, the decay and abandonment of rural communities, and the psychological effects of these themes. It can also explore the traumas of our dark ancestral histories, the kind of traumas that are passed down from generations, that society often tries to cover up. At least this is how I see it, and that’s the way I depict it in my work.
