as bad as this production looks to me, it has elements that remind me of the description of what John Napier was planning to do with the show, before it went to Maria Bjornson

Almost got caught for these but HERE IS RAMIN WITH HIS HAT
this is why i am thankful that Maria Bjornson was involved with the original production
since the closing, some Broadway new deformity photos are coming out. This is what i was talking about way back in January 2020, but back then the ‘bone’ on the cheek was a lot more yellow. and IMO the skull part is just too symmetrical to come across as natural
First time seeing the show since the London changes, and some have been put into place on Broadway. All of which I do like.
Just what I noticed:
The Mirror, the glass slides back on the first “I am your angel of music” rather than the second, giving the actors more time to get off stage and up onto the travelator, they don’t seem to use doubles anymore, the bit with Giry and the girls downstage was quite nice, and even though I could not see the phantom’s face up on the bridge, I could see clearly that it Julia was up there, so no doubles anymore in this scene.
IN the title song, the travelator does not move as much it kinda styed in the same spot for most of the song, stopping midstage until the last verse.
IN the first notes, when the phantom cuts in, the lighting is different, less orange and alot more turquoise.
In the croak, Piangi runs out from behind the bed
In the ballet, Giry comes out aswell
the rooftop seems alot brighter, there was alot of light coming on from stage left, more so than i remember.
this one is my favourite. I always love Mme Giry bits, when masquerade starts, just after the managers do their bit and the curtain goes up, Giry goes around the stage choreographing everyone’s moves from the group with the monkey to the people on the steps, making sure everyone id in sync and its just a lovely touch.
Giry also shows up when the phantom tries to run off with Christine before the gun shots and they have a nice moment of like a “help me giry, what do I do now?”
Minor lyric changes aswell, the one i could do without is the auction’s description of the chandelier being thought to have been destroyed or something similar.
Lastly I am still having a hard time with the new makeup, this time it was painted better, but it still makes no sence to me as to why change something that was perfect and replace it with something that looks more like halloween store makeup.
I will miss this production, I would admit that during the overture i started crying my eyes out.
I was in the audience Friday the day they announced the closing, sad day for me as it would be my last time seeing the show in my favourite location. but this happened, just before the end, just before Raoul and Christine rowed off in the boat, there was a loud crash, the show went on as it only had a few minutes untill the end, but then the curtain call took forever to get going, and when the red curtain went up, this black curtain (which I never saw before) was there and everyone had to squeeze infront it to bow. It is a curtain used during intermission behind the red house curtain to stop the onstage lights from shining through that red curtain, which is a light gauze. I am not sure what happened, whatever it was, they would not let anyone back onstage out of caution.

it’s nice to get pro photos of the new deformity. at first I had a real issue with it as it seemed to me to take it out of the realm of realism and more into some sort of, i don't know, this just doesn't look naturalistic. but then again my issue at the time was how it was painted on Broadway, rather than the sculpt. I have always liked the cheek section where it looks like tendons, now it looks more like a cheek bone sticking out. When i saw it last it was quite garishly painted, a ton of ‘fake looking’ blood red around a very yellow bone. I also had issue with the skull being such a symmetrical sculpt, things in biology are rarely so symmetrical, with the grooves coming in equally around the hole. Anyways, if it worked for 30 years why change it now? Will hope that we might see a photo from the Broadway production now that we have a new Christine coming in, hopefully they will, and hopefully they have toned down the red and yellow paint job.
just my opinion.
Emilie Kouatchou (Christine) and Ben Crawford (the Phantom) in POTO Broadway ( x )
Ben looks so much like Colm Wilkinson in this photo
new Mausoleum also (makes sense if the travelator is also different), looks nice to me
I cant tell but someone please explain, ive heard that these are projections but they seem pretty solid to me, and the backwall of squares (straight out of some of Maria’s sketches)
new deformity on view, I must say it looks nicer in London with this paint job, I do hope Broadway tones down the red when they reopen

Time to pick up Variety, it seems. Long interview with ALW on musical theatre and the pandemic ( from here )
did they change the curains? or is it just a strange colour edit of the photo? I dont recall the Majestic with blue curtains.
I hadn’t known that Her Majesty’s was part of a larger hotel building that was damaged in the war (theatre on the right)
Grant Norman’s London run, with his own London style mask (different to his US style mask), sadly back then (1996) Phantoms didn't get a whole new brochure spread, so these are the only 2 photos of him from his London run (Official ones anyways, plus a really grainy boat photo) He was my second Phantom (and first in London) and at the time I had a hard time with his voice, but I have grown to appreciate it alot over the years. there was also a rather extreme height difference between him and Christine (Niki Ankara here)
More photos of the updated/resesign deformity from London (also used recently on Broadway) excellently painted here. I still prefer the original skull crack section as that looked far more naturalistic, this one looks far too symmetrical with the brain bits dead centre. Here the painting is simple and naturalistic, this time last year I was seeing it on Broadway for the first time and was quite shook, they had it painted much darker, with all the eye socket a dark blood read and the jutting out cheek bone (now it is a bone not just muscle) was a bright yellow.
Phantom title song click track (original version) this is what the orchestra plays over, you can only really tell the difference when you get to the last verse as the interesting violin riffs are gone as those are live. You can also hear Sara’s vocalisations at the end to help sweeten the live singing. do enjoy

Remembering the legendary Hal Prince today ... (Here with Michael Crawford)
um no, here with Colm Wilkinson
someone is selling a chandelier, not quite in pieces. looks like one of the real ones too, perhaps US tour?
